View Full Version : Info required on writing a codec for WAV and any decent sites - newbie

Hi,

I was wondering if it's possible to take a WAV file and create a very
basic codec, even if it just reduced the file size by 50%. Would you
have to write your own player or is there anything out there which
would play the file if given header information etc.

Also, does anyone know any good sites regarding the standard audio and
audiovisual codec's with regard to how they work in a fair amount of
detail, comparisons between different ones etc.

Regards,

Sarah.

Tis an interesting question, but I'd have to suspect that this path
between lossless and lossy compression is very well trodden with
existing technologies.

Try this:

FLAC may do what you want--it seems to get around 50% compression:
