View Full Version : Sony CDX-CA650X No Sound

I have a Sony CDX-CA650X Head Unit that seems to work in every way
except no sound. I suspect that the Amp "chip" is bad. Does anyone
have experience with this (either recommend someone to repair or tell
me where to purchase the chip)?
Sony will only repair by swapping the unit with a $100+ charge (could
come close to buying a new unit for that). I have no reservations
about replacing the chip if I can find it.

Could have a grounded out speaker. Disconnect all speakers and hook one up
at a time to see if you can get sound out of any of em.

I installed the unit in a car with a similar working system and there
was no sound there either. Is there something about the original
installation which could have caused the failure that I see (grounded
out speaker or whatever)?

Sure, its entirely possible, if you grounded a positive speaker wire while
the unit was hooked up and powered on the unit's internal amplifier may be
fried.

What about the other part of my original question, does anyone know
where I could purchase the Amp IC, or recommend someone to repair it?

To be perfectly honest, its not really worth it to get it fixed Although you
can indeed get it fixed. Its going to cost quite a penny to have it
repaired and you can get the same radio for less than $200 at your local
bestbuy/circut city/(insert chain store here).
Most repairs are by the hour and if they charge say $50 and take 3 hours
you're out $150 for a unit that still has no warranty and could break again
tommorow. Proposed to a unit you would probably spend $170 on and its brand
new and has some kind of warranty with it.
Plus, there are better units out there than sony (much much better). if you
care about a nice quality deck, look into Nakamichi or Denon. if you're
looking for medim to high range look at Pioneer or Alpine, they both have
decent decks for around the same price of a brand new sony deck (what you
have) and are alot better in terms of quality. IMO

Actually on CD units we charge a flat rate of $53.50 labor plus parts, this
unit being a Sony, parts are a little high from them.To original poster: The
PCB is double sided on most units, if you aren't good at soldering I'd let a
shop replace the part as it's easy to tear the copper off the PCB thus
ruining it. The output IC is IC404, Part # 8-759-827-14 (TA8268AH) and is
$55.52 from sony, however it may be available from an alternate supplier for
less, I'll have to check monday and see. If you need a copy of the service
manual, i'd be glad to e-mail you one for $10.00...
