The Quad 405 is known to perform well in blind testing, but there are
(unsubstantiated) rumours of long term listening dissatisfaction. Also,
the Quad 405 is known to cause unusual growth of the proboscis in
certain aspiring audio deities.

;-)
The red ROE electros are prone to leakage and loss of capacity, so in
general it's a good idea to replace them.
Furthermore, there are some worthwile upgrades, such as replacement of
the 301 opamp, capacitors in general and adding cinch connectors.
I had a "modified" (read: replacement of old components) Quad for
repair here and I must say, it was a fine sounding amp.
Of course, this was a sighted evaluation, so my comment is probably
useless ;-)

**The original Quad 405 was a pitifully inadequate amp, vis a vis current
capability. The 405-II was an improvement, but still inadequate for
difficult loads. Other than that, either amp is an adequate, if uninspiring
performer. After modification, either amp performs OK.
