Head unit for XKE - minimal space

I am seeking leads on what head units are sold for minimal-space
dashboards - specifically installation into an XKE. The space is fairly
restricted and a trunk-mount + "head face" is certainly an acceptable
option.

My preference for that type of install is a dash-mounted unit such as
the Becker Europa stereo which combines vintage look for the dash and
excellent tuner performance, fed into an older hideaway unit that
controls a hidden CD changer plus has preamp functions (as you
mentioned) like the Sony RM-X2 or RM-X2001 systems, or one of the Alpine
or Pioneer equivalents. The Becker/Sony combo is what is going into my
68 Triumph TR-250.
