Some chick in San Francisco is selling an original (note: _not_ custom shop)
1958 Fender Stratocaster for $1600 obo. Talk about a good arbitrage
opportunity.

It would be hard to consider that one could not
retrieve most of the parts. For it to be
'crap', the neck and body would both have to be
irretrievable and unrestorable. Even then, the pickups are worth lots.
But better to leave the body as is, than to refin.
Just about anything can be fixed, and WILL be fixed,
considering the value.

As long as the neck is ok, one can deal with just about everything else.

Probably it's a fake. My best guess is that 50% to 90% of pre-CBS
Fenders on the market today are phonies to one extent or other.

Check out Ed Roman's web site sometime.

Also consider this: leading vintage whore George Gruhn came out a year
or two ago and said HE WILL NOT BUY CUSTOM COLOR PRE-CBS STRATS ANYMORE
because _he_ can't tell them from refins, out and out scratchbuilt
phoneys, and parts guitars using FGG (Japan) Fender/Squier reissues
before they smartened up and changed some things deliberately.

Yep, after numerous shenanigans this woman finally told me that she is not
in San Francisco, but in Tasmania!! What a lunatic.
