faq and tutorials for proper slot port design/construction?

am looking for some quality FAQs and tutorials about designing and building
slot ports for enclosures. I have a general understanding of what is
necessary, and physical construction is a non issue. Its the design that
I'm interested in.

I keep hearing about people with xx square inches of port....is this the
internal surface area of the port (with end correction)?

any info would be much appreciated....
