View Full Version : simple birthsheet question

I know I've asked a similar question before but I'm having some
confusion with my MTX 251D amplifier's birthsheet. I'm just trying
to figure out what power it really puts out. The sheet says:
2 ohm 12.5 volts DC testing
Max power >=(greater than or equal to) 160 Watts RMS, result: 224 Watts
So does this mean it's 40% underrated and puts out more like 350W at
14.4V? I emailed MTX themselves and the tech said that rating means it
puts out "around 250W". However that doesn't seem to make sense. The
amp's specs are here:

All MTX amps are underrated. There are several factors that determine the
clean power output of an amp. Factors are voltage input, THD, and
frequency. The way they rate their amps in the specs means that the amp
will put out at least that amount of power. In your case, the 251D will put
out at least 160W @ 2ohms @ 12.5V as shown on the spec sheet. In reality,
the tests show it will put out 224W @ 2ohms @ 12.5V. And chances are that
it will put out more than 250W @ 2ohms @14.4V, possibly 275 - 300 Watts.
They usually test their amps using a higher level of THD, but still less
than audible. This is why the tests show higher than the specs.

Damn I feel cheated.. I have a 421D rated at 300 - 12.5 @ 2Ohms
My Birthsheet only rated it @ 332. You must have gotten a good one.

fascinating... these guys run some smoke and mirrors games with basic
amplifier power testing methodology, and they manage to confuse about
98% of the buying public as to the actual performance of their products
and how to benchmark them against others. If that isn't marketing, I
don't know what is.

Its always about marketing. :)
Ok...Then what are the most important things to look for? ( If we could
believe the #'s on the spec sheet.? I know is could take pages but in
laymans terms.. And what about the new standard coming out? Is this going to
help or add to the confusion?
