Hi everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade my system, starting with speakers.

At present I have a Yamaha AX570 hooked up to a Pioneer 578A
DVD, technics tuner, Headroom Little (running Sennheiser 595s), Axiom
CT-6s, JBL sub for "A" speakers & B&W 200 series "B"s (the latter
mainly because I can't make up my mind which set sounds better, not
really seeking surround at present).

The room is 10' x 20', with main speakers, Axioms, set on
either side of a desk, sub right below the left side (matter of fact,
I bought the B&Ws because they have front-firing vents, which I
thought would be better as both Axioms are fronting windows, but I
didn't like them in that position, so I moved them to the back).

I can't imagine, at the present, needing anything beyond say a
B&W 602, or Paradigm SR 40. But neither do I want a garage full of
good-quality but obsolete speakers.

I'm considering the 705/805s from B&W but word is they need a
bit more power than average to open up, and that might be a problem. I
want something that sounds good even at low volume.

Now I'm wondering about splitting the difference and trying
the 604s. Placement is a bit tricky for a floor-stander, but I ought
to be able to manage. I'd save money not having to upgrade my stands,
or subwoofer, because I already realize the JBL's not going to cut it
alongside 7 or 805s.

But what about volume requirements?

Do 600 series floor-standers have similar volume requirements
to the 7/805s?

Also, if new speakers are bookshelf, I'm not sure if they're
going by the desk, or if I'll make space against the far wall for
them. Would the front-vented versions be more versatile in terms of
placement than the rear-vented ones?

TIA

Andy Katz

Your mileage must be determined by listening, but the matter of
"speaker obsolescence" has to be dealt with. A really successful
speaker becomes truly obsolete when, and only when, the laws of physics
change. Of course there are material improvements...but many designs
that were respectable speakers when JFK was president and trollops
really were headworthy still are, in essence.

Any one who tells you different is wrong, like Kroomel , Pinko, and
McKelvy. Weigh their obsobabble, then audition if possible a really
first rate speaker such as one of the modernized K-horn based units or
a active or Mastering Lab crossed-over 604 Altec.
It's not that they are perfect, but that they do so many things so well
and with so much more class and poise than many saloon favorites such
as the Thiels or popular "alternatives" like Legacys.
