Firms Paid TV's Tech Gurus To Promote Their Products
By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer

Corey Greenberg, tech editor for NBC's "Today" show, appeared last
July to praise Apple's iPod as "a great portable musical player . . .
the coolest-looking one" and suggested a compatible device to "share
your music with other people." "This is the way to go," he declared.
"Let's cut the Apple commercial here right now, okay?" co-host Matt
Lauer interjected.
Lauer was onto something. Greenberg, an NBC contributor, confirmed
yesterday that he has received payments from Apple as well as Sony,
Hewlett-Packard, Seiko Epson, Creative Technology and Energizer
Holdings, charging $15,000 apiece to talk up their products on news
shows. The contracts were first disclosed by the Wall Street Journal.

I seem to recall that Cory was dropped by Stereophile for similar
misconduct.
Does anyone remember the details?

He wasn't dropped that hard bt SP - they still have articles on their
site that mention him favorably.

I thought that someone with deeper pockets hired him.

Corey Greenberg (not "burg") left Stereophile in 1994. He wanted/needed
more money/responsibility; I wasn't in the position to give him either.
His final review was of the Snell Type C/V loudspeaker in November
1994.
> I thought that someone with deeper pockets hired him.
He left Stereophile to join Home Theater magazine, then Sound & Vision,
then Audio where he was the final editor in chief before that
magazine's demise.
Regarding the question in your thread title, Mr. Krueger, the answer
is "no." I have fired writers for behaving in this manner. You are
welcome, of course, to raise this question at next Friday's debate in
New York, if you think it relevant.

There's probably some irony in that. The ragazine didn't die for lack
of subjectivism on the part of the editor.

Attempt to scare Arnii ****less noted. Rubbing Krooger's snout in his
impotency noted. Illumination of Krooger's inability to discern relevance
noted.

Slander concerns persons not magazine.
Have you noted the interrogation point at the end of the sentence ?
I hope you are a better waiter than prosecutor... ;-)
Slander :
noun: words falsely spoken that damage the reputation of another
noun: an abusive attack on a person's character or good name
verb: charge falsely or with malicious intent; attack the good name and

This is correct. Lionel busted me for the wrong thing. I guess he's

Oh, I saw it. But it was about as meaningful as the smarmy-winky at
the end.
Both of you missed the word "implied" anyway. Admitting the presence
of that word would be admitting that you were whining about nothing.

Tell us why you haven't worked in years.
When did you leave Chrysler?
What were the circumstances?
Ah!, so in your 'better' years, you were
a wage slave!

I'd like to know how Arnii learned he had been sacked. Did they serve him
at home, or just deactivate his key card? Did they send security to his
desk or a court-appointed shrink to his home?

John prefers that his magazine's contributors simply be
deluded, rather than be crafty opportunists like Mr.
Greenberg.
Ironically, given that Mr. Atkinson must certainly be aware
of the fact that many of his reviewers spout claptrap during
reviews and thereby mislead readers, and given that his
impressionable and often deluded readers very often like to
read claptrap and be misled and would cancel their
subscriptions if the magazine took a more rational approach
to evaluating wires, amps, and CD players, just how is he
more ethical than Mr. Greenberg?
Perhaps he keeps those phonies on the payroll, because
without them the magazine would lose subscribers.
Of course, I could be wrong about all of this. Maybe he is
as deluded as those contributors.
Hey, John, just kidding. Have a nice day.

I hope Arnii listens to you, Clerkie. You're one of the only friends he

Arnii, if your antenna are extended, try to ignore the carrier beam.
Instead, focus on the coded message. Time is getting perilously short for

Now you've got it, Arnii. Except in your case, "fraud" isn't quite the

I imagine they would assume that someone other than Arny wrote that
I was a "two-faced prick." As will Arny if this subject comes up
next Friday. :-)

No, Tom wrote what follows below, just as surely as I said:
"I'll try to be my usual sweet self, but you know how I can be pompus
to the point of being overbearning."
This clearly must be a perfect quote of what I said, since that's what
Tom quoted me saying in his post.

Don't take it personally, John. The point is that Tom had lots of fun
forging neat things for me say in his reply to my post. So since he
obviously thinks this is excellent form, I thought it would be
appropriate to return the honor.

He got no more money. He spent all his extra savings buying up
treated woods for his house addition project last year. His wife
said that if he spend another dollar for audio related expense,
she'll cut off his one remaining ball while he's asleep.
This is the reason he can't elaborate when ask if he's going
to attend.

Good suggestion. I'd like to see what happens when Arnii gets his check

Honestly, I've met a lot of the folks who post here. I've met
a few of Arny's friends. Every single person I've met has been
nice. I suspect that when Arny and John meet, things will be
friendly. I don't see Arny treating John with the disrespect
he's so free with here. But I wish I could be there to see it.
I look forward to watching the video.
Arny - I actually give you a lot of credit for standing up in

That's "given", Arnii? The only way it could be given to you is
involuntarily. What is known is that you hate music, and that is the
reason human beings adopt audiophilia as a hobby. Furthermore, your idea
of audio equipment is quaint -- you can't tell real gear from that random
collection of parts and junk you wallow in.
You're as much an audiophile as Ferstler is a logician.

Just in case anyone is still interested in the original topic, the thing
that originally put CG on the skids with Stereophile was that he wrote a
piece or pieces (been a while) for another magazine, when he had an
agreement with Stereophile to be exclusive to them. From the talk at the
time, he did not tell JA about this, and it appeared that he didn't because
he knew it wouldn't be approved. This led to a big brouhaha where he
demanded more money for his continued "loyalty" to which Sphile told him to
go pound sand.

Some of it, yes. Around Christmas I made a 74 minute compendium of the
best recordings I made of *that* music, from the past 3 years. Some of
it was kinda lame, some was very lame, but some of it was really
pretty good. Some of it I just like listening to just because I like
the people who made the music.
Life has changed a bit. Three years ago I realized that in order to
have really good music in that context I was going to have to fix a
lot of things. I was going to have to fix the organization, I was
going to fix the room, I was going to have to learn how to do good SR,
I was going to have to fix the SR system, I was going to have to learn
how to make good recordings, and I was going to have to fix the
recording system which started out as a cassette deck.
God has been good and some of all of the above has already taken
place. There have been some important organizational changes, there
are moves afoot to make some changes to the room, the SR system has
improved and may shortly be getting far better, and the recorder is
now a 20 track backed up with a CD-R recorder. I've learned a few
things along the way, too.

Shows how little you know about recording and live sound, Tom. No way
can get good recordings or live sound based purely on measurements.
Too much is only roughly known for that to be true. They both still
have heavy doses of art in them.

Been there, done that but its not the *Final Answer*.
I guess www.pcabx.com is way over your head, Tom. Or as your hero

Not at all. I turned Tom's forgery on its head by making it into abuse

John, have you lost your mind? That was how I turned Tom's forgery on
its head!

Tom puts words I never said in my mouth, I put words that Tom never
said in his mouth. My words were far funnier, of course. Definately
got a rise out of you, didn't I? ;-)

Well yes John, it makes it all right just like the fact that you
laugh yourself silly over all of Middius' and Roy's *humorous*
comments. Maybe I should write more about sodomizing dead boys and the
Kroobitch like they do? Would that improve your perceptions of the
humor in what I write? That's British humor for you, isn't it? ;-)

It's all matter of whose ox is gored, John. It's often a lot funnier
when someone you aren't in love with is the butt of the joke. I'm
sorry that you don't know this.

Again John your paranoa and inability to read comes to light. Read
what I said, not what your paranoid mind creates. I said Nousaine is
coming along, not that he's going to speak. He may be in the audience
or he may have something more worthwhile to do at the time, like be
someplace else where's there's more intelligent life.

Margaret, I didn't think appropriate to give the writer's name.

My guess is Jonathan Scull, for twofold reasons:
1. Bullying manufacturers for "permanent loan" of expensive
components for favorable reviews, and
2. The hatchet job on the Richard Grey Power Company
surge protectors.
A lack of denial will serve as confirmation. OK, John?

Apocryphal stories don't need to be connected to actual events for their
import to be understood. (Take note, Harold.)

Yes, and because of this he will be desperate to defend his
turf and will become more desperate if things start to look
bad for him during the debate. A good debater will
capitalize on this and hit him in his weakest areas. Find
the weaknesses and then drive the spike home.
Remember, this guy, for all of his posturing about defending
high-end audio, defending his approach to DBT work,
defending his antipathy for you, and defending his magazine,
is more than anything else very, very interested in gaining
the esteem of the really big names in audio engineering.
That just has to mean a LOT to him.
He wants to be taken seriously by people who know a lot
about acoustics, electronics, and audio in general. Right
now, this is not the case, but he is working to improve him
image. He is in a very bad place to be, because he wants to
look like a hero to the tweakos, but he also wants to have
the respect of the experts. And that is IMPOSSIBLE to do in
this business. You need to make sure that this contrast is
very clear to the more intelligent and influential members
of the audio community.
Your job, "should you decide to take on the task, Mr.
Krueger" (with a nod to Mission Impossible), is to make him
look like a knowledge-ignoring propagandist for tweako
audio. No matter what, you need to get the members of the
engineering establishment in a position to sneer at this man
and what he stands for even more than they do now. That will
do him more harm than proving a few small points about ABX
or even putting his job at Stereophile at risk.

I certainly hope so.

I am sure that Tom will be more than able to ask questions
after the debate that you will cause you to squirm a bit. He
does not need to do a presentation to do an "Emperor Has No
Clothes" operation on you, John.
I simply cannot believe that you have put yourself into a
position like this, where an outsider with essentially
nothing to lose will be in a position to cause you great
harm. I mean, a guy like you has to both want the esteem of
the tweakos and also want the esteem of the
audio-engineering establishment. You may make the tweakos
happy during this "debate," but your position with the
engineers is going to suffer in a big way. I mean, you are
actually going to have to come right out and say things that
real audio engineers consider to be a joke.

I'll leave that to his own sweet self.
My plan is to implement the rule: "Keep it simple, stupid".

They do that plenty, already. If that was my only goal, I'd be done
already.

That's the essence of what Greenberg learned from Atkinson: money buys
good press, good reviews and "buzz". $tereopile launders the money they
take from manufacturers under the guise of "advertising revenue". The
quid pro quo, of course, is a good review and a place on the RCL.
Greenberg got lazy (or stupid) and omitted the laundering step, making
the payola aspect brutally obvious.
