A friend has a LP12 with the Valhalla mods. He's got an opportunity to buy
one with the Lingo mods but he cannot listen to it first. What can he expect
if he gets the Lingoed one? How much is the improvement worth in $$$ in your
opinion. The rest of his equipment consists of ESL63's with Gradient subs
and Audio Research tubed amplification. It sounds very very good as it is.
He plans on using his existing Graham 2.0 arm and Clavis Da Capo and Koetsu
Urushi cartridges to the foreseeable future.
Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Margaret

I've managed to resist the urge thus far, but one concrete objective
advantage is 45 RPM capability. FWIW, Art Dudley compares the Lingo to
the competition in a recent Stereophile:

Hmm. Gradient subs...I wonder how Quads sound with an ARC D-70.

I just bought a used Lingo (1, the smaller case) and the improvement is
GREAT, overall a much more stable sound, more enjoyable for ex. piano
music etc.
Note that Lingo is NOT a mod. It's a box with a controller card for
controlling the motor in the LP12 so out goes the old Valhalla card and
in goes a cord and a new on/off switch with 33/45 (you hold the button
down for 5 sec's for 45)
I bought mine for about 280 usd

Many people have found that alternative power supplies are as
beneficial as the Lingo or more so. It has been reported that
replacing the Linn motor is a more significant upgrade. Both AC and DC
alternatives exist.
An article in AudioXPress some time ago covered the building of a
dedicated variable frequency power supply for exactly the purpose as
the Lingo. However, simply buying a lab grade Behlman Invar variable
frequency power supply-they have been made for forty years and to
better standards than Ivor could comprehend-from a good used test
equipment broker, or, horrors, ebay, could be far more cost effective.
A McIntosh power amp, a suitable transformer or autoformer (or an old
one with HV taps for bench and distributed power use) and a good audio
generator makes a fine variable supply for those rare occasions when
45s must be played on the 33 rpm pulley or 78's on the 45. Most
audiophiles play 45s very rarely, so this is time and cost-effective.
