My old and cheap CD changer just died. It was nothing worth mentioning.
but it was useful. Now I face the task of replacing it and feel
completely overwhelmed with number of reviews and suggestions.
I have an old but wonderful NAD P/E receiver and thought of matching
the quality and style by purchasing their DVD/CD player...well it was
about $800 but is discontinued anyway. Next thought was Harman Kardon
line (8385). It looks nice, heard a lot good about it...but I really
am not sure. How about Marantz?
I would prefer to spend no more than $300. What is possible in that
range?
Any suggestions?
Thnx

Look at the thread about CD players sounding the same.
It turns out that the differences between $100.00 players and $1000.00
players are essentially nothing. Sound quality will be the same, so
buy what you can afford and what you like.

Thanx for the suggestion. What I am concerned about is the durability.
My "old" one lasted 1.5 years. It is not enough. I read also baaaad
reviews of Harman in terms of breaking down, etc. I think I will go
with Yamaha for $130 or so. ...It is palin and ugly but does the job.
NAD is sooooo cool and pretty:):) no redundant lights, knobs, etc. Most
other brands with their fron panel dispalys make u feel u are about to
fly a chopper not load a cd.:)

Sony would also be good choice. If you can find a Rotel player in your
price range, they also seem to be built well IME.

CD players are highly obsolescent. Thing is, while cheap DVD players
can sound great, IME they can have serious reliability and control
problems.

For example, I picked up a $40 DVD player which sounded and measured
very well, but it was inconvenient to use because it had no display at
all, and it died while packed up in its box after about 9 months. I
had another DVD player that cost me $120. Again it sounded and
measured well, but it died in only about 18 months, like yours.

In contrast, my old Pioneer DVD-525 still measures and sounds great,
and keeps on ticking after 3-4 years.

I ran into another inexpensive DVD player that had a LCD display, but
the display did not show either track or chapter numbers. Didn't
display time either. It's almost like why have a LCD display and not
display critical information like this?

What is possible in that range would be one of the Pioneer universal
DVD/CD/SACD/DVD-A players. You should have at least $100 left over.

The NAD C521BEE seems to fall within your price range.

Irrelevant, but I wouldn't expect you to understand why, Dormer.

Obsolescent is a bit of a stretch, but highly obsolescent? You have got to
be kidding.
