View Full Version : Are Sony speakers of good quality?

Sony TV's Video camera's are of high quality, I was wondering if the
same can be said about their speakers.
I had a listen to Sony SSK30EDP speakers and they seem to sound better
than my Kef C25 speakers. There was plenty of bass for bookself
speakers. They are a hybrid enclosure design (what ever that means) At
first they did sound a bit hollow but the room was small and the sound
would be reflecting off the bare walls.

Sony makes many products of differing quality levels in TV and video
electronics. Some of their higher end (relatively speaking) products in
this area are of pretty good performance technically, especially their
LCD and DLP TVs. However, their build quality typically leaves much to
be desired IMO. I mean, you can pay $5k for a DLP TV encased in a
cheap, thin plastic shell. Then again most of their processors are made
by other companies, like Texas Instruments, so maybe they really aren't
that great after all.

I've never listened to their speakers, but Sony isn't exactly highly
regarded in this area by audiophiles. But if you like them, that's all
that matters.

True. Though the Sony ES series have some fairly well regarded digital
sources, even by audiophile standards.

They do have some very very expensive gear including loudspeaker.
They even made some pretty good Turntable and Moving Coil Phono
Cartridge in the not to far past.
Just check www.sony.jp but it's in japanese.
Same for Accuphase, Denon, Onkyo, Panasonic(Technics) etc...
Thank you
Jean
The best resource for the Western student of Japanese audio are the
physical magazines, MJ and Stereo Sound. They have photos, schematics,
line drawings and enough English text to sometimes get the gist of the
story.
Learning Japanese is not a realistic goal if your only concern with it
is audio and I know of no really knowledgeable Japanese reading
occidentals who have chosen to translate any sizable amount of Japanese
text.

Thanks for your replies.
I was hoping someone would say something like. "I own a pair of Sony
speakers and they sound great".
If anyone reading this owns Sony speakers then please tell me the
model and would you recommend these speakers.
Regards Brian
Although Sony as a corporation would certainly have the technological
resources to build great speakers if it suited their purpose, there is,
as you've seen, no evidence they have done so.
I can tell you I own a pair of Klipsch LaScalas and believe their
basic design is quite good but that they are sorely in need of
modernization , which a couple of small firms seem to be working on at
the moment. I would not recommend new current Klipsch Classic products
at theiir current price points and state of standard fit.
If you want a small inexpensive pair of box speakers there are many
choices and I would base my choice on listening, resale value, ease of
resale, and ease of replacement drivers and parts if you blow one up.
NOT necessarily in that order.
I have friends with the B&W 602's (the older Series) and they seem
okay. I have another friend whom I assisted to build a pair of serious
tube amps who has Ohm speakers, which he loves, and I don't. I believe
Thiel and Linn are overpriced and not exceptional and that Wilson Audio
is really pretty good but even more overpriced. I refuse to take
anything from Madrigal or any speaker -no offense to Roger Russell-from
McIntosh with any great amount of seriousness. (Sort of like Kroo.)
Personally if you have the room and are not a colossal chamber music
fan (if you are, you'll wind up with dipoles, often reworked Quads) I
think a modern horn is the way to go. Your mileage may vary.
If you have serious questions, I would buy some books from Madisound
or OCSL. They ask the right questions, although I disagree with some of
the answers they propose.
