View Full Version : Cartridge for Dual 506

I want to find a new cartridge for my Dual 506 that I've just taken out
of storage. This Dual came with a Dual/Ortifon cartridge when it was
new. When I replaced that original cartridge I had a 1/2in adapter
installed and a Bang & Olufsen mount attached to that. I used a B&O
MMC3 cartridge until I shelved the unit and was satisfied with the
midfi sound. I see that there is a Wilfit B&O replacement cartridge
sold on the web and ebay for $140.00, but for that price I'd like to
try a "real" cartridge. I thought of trying a budget Grado, but I've
read that there are compatiblity issues, hum and low tone arm mass,
with Dual turntables. Any suggestions for less tha US$150.00? The Dual
functions perfectly, but bear in mind it has a low mass tone arm and
there is no VTA.

I highly recommend going back to Ortofon and going with either a OM 10
or OM 20. South Street Service has been offering the OM 20 on Ebay for
just under $100.00. The nice thing about this series is that you can
upgrade to the next level (10 to 20 or 30) by simply swapping out the
stylus. So you'll never waste your money.
Another possibility is a Shure Cartridge. They make some nice ones
too.
Let me mention another thing about your Dual. If it has been in
storage for awhile, the lubricants in this unit have probably dried
out. You should clean all the old stuff out and apply new. What
happens is that parts start to stick and drag and then break. Clean and
relube this turntable as directed and it will certainly last almost
forever.
I think the Dual Reference website has details on how to do this.
