Perhaps Stereophile should review the Hot House amplifiers. If Arny
thinks they're overbuilt and underengineered, they could be really good.

John,
On a more serious note, is Stereophile planning to review the German Physiks
Gaudis anytime soon? I believer some Ferrari models are cheaper than a pair
of those monsters.

Guarantee they are better than some of the piece of **** vintage
halfass tube boxes you were so upset I parted out for guitar amp parts.
Many tube amps suck worse than these and many other solid state amps.

Hmmm, accurate reproduction of audio signals is painful for you? How
sad that you can't enjoy music the way it's supposed to sound.

Without usuing your usual debatuing trade tautologies.
What music is 'supposed' to sound like is a subjective matter.

Depends whether your goal is high fidelity. If you goal is high
fidelity, then reproduced music is supposed to sound like the
origional performance.
Thanks Art for admitting that your goal is to not have a high fidelity
audio system.

How about higher fidelity ..... better than original?
What exactly does an electronic instrument fed directly into a
recorder sound like anyway? Sounds like a dbx tape played back w/o dbx
expansion, i.e., complete ****. Your premise that all music
originates as sound is false.

Once again George you should avoid to speak about things that you don't know, that you don't understand.
Wine is Wine. Audio is audio. Between the worst and the best there's a very large place for an immense diversity.
The most expensive is not always the best.
The best one day perhaps will be not the best in other circumstances.
The "overwhelming opinion of connoisseurs" haven't any interest compared to the pleasure of the personal experience.
This is my definitive point about wine... For Corbières and all other
terroires.

Ooops I forgot to tell you the true of this wine story...
The irony is that our George, expert in subjectivity, didn't
hesit to give a public opinion about a wine that he *never*
tasted, based only on the "overwhelming opinion of wine
connoisseurs".
Interesting example of subjectivity, no ?
Don't you think that our George Middius the subjectivity
lover and wine expert is also a famous hypocrit ? ;-)
You don't believe me ?
Ask him how many wine from Corbières he had already tasted ?

"At least" Lionel knows the difference between

Sluts comments about the neighbor reference past

I never said such a thing. However a great deal of music does exist as
live sound or something like it. Some doesn't. Is this your idea of a
news flash, Scottie? If so its pretty lame and very insulting.

98% or so of recorded music is manufactured music. There is no origional
performance.
The 2 % or so that are live recordings of an origional performance,
well, the sound of those origional performances will vary with the
listeneners' locations. And fidelity to your beloved 'measurements'
does not guarantee fidelity to the sound of the
origional performance, at whatever location
you might chose.

To the average human, no. To you, quite possibly.

Poor Arnie, in additon to all your troubles we now have to add a very
thin skin to your long list of malaise.
So in the absence of a live event to reproduce, what standard can one
apply to judge fidelity?

The answer is that it has no sound. It is just an electrical signal at
that point. I'm sorry that you need me to tell you this Arny. Scott
obviously knew this. That was why he asked a rhetorical question.

Not according to fightingillini.com
Even the womens gymnastics team is the Fighting Illini.

They are a very good team but if Illinois is hitting their shots, they
are unbeatable. They haven't really shot as well as they are capable of
the whole tournament. If you saw the Wake game early in the year you
would know what I mean. Literally rained 3's on poor Wake.. they were
blown out in the first 15 minutes. And Felton has on occasion cracked
under pressure and Illini D can apply some serious ball pressure.
As always, the refs can dictate the outcome... I thought the
ticky-tack calling early in the Louisville game was gonna be the end
for Illinois but Louisville didn't shoot well at the line and then they
let 'em play more in the 2nd half and the Illini fortunately had the
fouls distributed pretty evenly across the team. Nobody had to spend
time on the bench in the second half, Williams did sit a bit in the
first and it let Louisville close to within 3. Smith came in off the
bench and played very well for awhile giving Illini size inside on the
defensive boards, drew some big fouls, hit a few shots. Unsung hero of
the game IMO.
No matter how the final turns out... this tournament has been
incredible for college basketball fans.

Given themany thousands of recordings I am aware of, it is
a decent number, and heavily supports the issue at hand, and refutes
your idiotic statements about 'original performances'.
You still haven't refuted my assertion, because you can't.
To do so, you would look like even more of an idiot than you

I am a modest hand-ball player who is not really interested

I think the second half of the Michigan State game, when UNC decided to
'get after it', showed what they're capable of. I'm looking for a
mostly close game with UNC pulling away late.
And, yes, whoever wins, this has been a great tournament.

Wrong, now that your socialist government has decided you need to work
48 hours/week perhaps they will also grant you a wage that affords you
a TV.

When does you liberal government will decide a general diet ? It is top
urgent now, there's more sugar in the blood of the average american than in

That's not sad in fact that's marvellous !!!
Maximum 2 days after a meal you can have purged 100% of the
bull**** that Weil has served you... Since a TV, even small,
continues long time after to pollute your mind and your
environment.
I am not jealous nor envious. Money is not a big issue for
me (at least for the moment). I have eaten recently a
fantastic "Lapin à la bière au miel et aux fruits secs" in a
small restaurant for a *ridiculous* price. It was divine.
I have eaten some marvellous fishes in Portugese restaurants
that would cost you 50 times the price I paid in a Parisian
restaurant.
Why to pay +100 euros for the same bottle of wine that you
can purchase for 10 euros only in a supermarket ?
There are still a lot places to discover where we can have a
lot of pleasure for affordable prices.
I waste my time, you are too snob and too neurasthenic to be
a real epicurean.
I wish you to buy a very large TV, so nice and so large that
jealousy will cause a coronary to your neighbour.
Cool no ?

Dave I'm afraid that you don't know the difference between
structural and "conjunctural". So I don't see any interest

Nota : I know that the word "conjuctural" doesn't exist.
I create it and it will be *my* translation of the french

This should means "pertaining to a conjuncture".

Fictional or not, those numbers would not surpise me at all. Let's face
it, the majority of recorded music sold has been processed, sweetened,
compressed, limited, equalized, mixed, converted, and more. I doubt if one
could get a live performance to sound even remotely similar to what is on a
commercial mixed and processed CD.
Classical is one of the last styles that has not been processed to death.
Having said that, there was a recent article in a magazine that described
the recording of an octet by a single quartet. It was done in two sessions
and then mixed. It was rather difficult but it was done. I have not
bought the CD in qustion yet, but I will.

Maybe, maybe not. However Art did make the numbers up out of thin air
to prove the bogus point that accuracy is not a reasable criteria for
judging audio systems.

That obviously depends on the CD. But, are you then agreeing with
Art's claims that having audio gear that applies global EFX to the
recordings is plays is superior and always preferable to audio systems
that are more accurate?

IMO, not exactly processing the sound to death.

The application of EFX is a matter of personal preference. Some people
like listening to things that I could not. I assert that his claim that
98% is sweetened or in his words "manufactured", isn't too far off. I am
one of those people who doesn't buy that 98% either.
Does the synthesis of music detract from the pleasure of listening to it?
Maybe. It all depends. Why do some people cheer about Naxos recordings
and others loathe them? Personal preference. Why do some people prefer
vertical linear array speakers over point source speakers? Personal
preference.
What is your preference Arny? Accurate or enhanced music? Maybe a little
of both? I prefer my classical accurate yet for some other types of music
I must admit that I prefer it enhanced.

No, not exactly, but it is a step in that direction and it is a technique
that, as far a classical is concerned, has been largely ignored until now.

Measured with the US standarts it would be around 5 to 6%.
But anyway you are right it's not an honorable performance.

This above statistic is interesting only for those who are
in the average.
I am more interested in the harmonious distribution of the
income per capita than in is level. This is why I am happy
to live in my "socialist" country. ;-)
If you watch carefully this international statistic you will
see that some feodal countries have a higher average income
per capita than USA...

Your class envy is noted.
The fact that doctors, lawyers and engineers cannot earn
much more than mere sewer inspectors must bring you great joy.
Now as for your little kiddies with their free
government laptops, they have little incentive to do more
than play video games on them, since there is lttle economic
incentive to study hard to be a professor, doctor or lawyer, than to
not study at all and become a street sweeper or burger flipper.
LOL! Maybe they will grow up to be a rude
bus attendant at CDG!

Sweetened isn't the same as manufactured unless you believe that a

you drop a grain of sugar on it.

I think you asked the wrong question, Rich. Music is always
manufactured.

Perhaps, not, but the point is still valid, IMO. All those Americans
who griped about the French being "ingrates" when they refused to
support Bush's illegal war in Iraq need a better grasp of history.

Yeah, but our poverty level is twice the income as yours,
and oour povery level affords a much higher standard of living
as does your poverty level.
Apples and oranges, France's and the USA's poverty
levels are msuch diferent, and afford different standards of living.
Poverty level is defined as being below 50% of median income.
Since our median income is much higher than yours, poverty in the
USA is a much better state of being than is poverty in France.

Waaaaaaaaaay back when.
Living off the glory of 200 years ago. Yes, there was once
a time when France mattered, in world affairs. That time
has long passed. Too bad the French can't come to grips with it.

I would not call Cubans, Vietnamese, East Germans, Poles,
Russians who have fled from tyranny cowards. These are often
acts of danger and extreme courage. I would even put
French Huguenots in this category.

That does not change the fact that, if it weren't for French
intervention beginning in 1778, you might be saluting the Union Jack
today, SackO. The colonists were *not* going to win that war on their
own. The French made the difference - deal with it, you short-sighted
jingoist.

And considering your definition of Sackman family glory, I think it's better
like that.

My point was that personal preference in listening to music generally takes
precedence.

I will take that as a 'yes' to both with a qualifying 'depending' which
incidentally is exactly how I would have to answer.
I mostly prefer accurate but OTOH I have been known to listen to some
recordings that need a little help and they receive it. While not planned
at all, I am listening to a 1958 mono recording of "La Boheme" and I am
processing it and enjoying it immensely. Much more so than if I left it
alone. If I listen to the 1972 performance it requires nothing added or
processed just like the 2001 performance I have. The latter 2 are just
fine sraight out of the box.
The 1958 Mimi is a clear and wonderful in her diction as one could possibly
want no matter if it were live or reproduced. Her singing is sweet and
without excessive vibrato, which can kill an otherwise wonderful perfomance
before it has a chance to get going. Rodolfo is equally great. The entire
cast is wonderful.
If you do not appreciate opera than you have no idea what I am talking
about or referring to.

After a lot of long exchange with Sackman I arrive to the
following characterization :
1 - He is suffering a total lack of personality
2 - He is a repressed pederast.
IMHO (2) is the consequence of (1).

You are a liar your definition of the "poverty line" was
false and you have proven that you don't understand what's
the "GDP per capita".
So by the above you confirm that you are an idiot liar...

My conclusion was a little bit unprecise :
IMHO you are a *repressed* pederast because of your lack of
personality.
Without any doubt this is the influence of a skittish and
tyrannic jewish mama full of dogmas and superstitions.
Poor Sackman his mother have made an empty bag of him...

If you want to be as unresponsive as possible Rich, be my guest! Just

My point is that most people don't listen to music to hear their own
creation unless they are a recordist or musician, those being a small
fraction of the total audience for a recording. They listen to music
to hear what someone else wants to communicate to them. The more you
meddle with the music, the less likely full communication with the
origional creative people is possible.

Actually, just about every aspect of music that you listed here
relates to music in general, but Rich your self-centeredness
apparently keeps you from knowing that.

Yes just one, a Maganavox/Philips 32 incher.

This is in fact almost the exact truth. Despite the old saw about NTSC
being "Never The Same Color Twice", I can count the number of times
I've messed with the color adjustments of my TV on one hand. I've
always ended up returning them to the as-delivered state.

Interesting reply Arny. Apparantly I have failed to make my point clear.
It would appear that Art's goals in music reproduction are not the same as
mine and possibly yours. Art really likes processing his music. I don't.
I believe that you don't like processing your music either.
Art's goals in music reproduction are different, not wrong. Art, if I get
something wrong, please feel free to correct me, but it would appear Art
likes a lot of "sizzle" with his steak whereas you and I care more about
the steak. The sizzle adds nothing for us. That is as close as I can come
with an analogy.
Two different goals for music. Neither wrong. The common goal is to enjoy
music. The difference is in what it should sound like for maximum
enjoyment.

Really? Well that certainly is different from my previous experiences.
Editing took care of single note or a cluster of notes whereas sweeting
took care of the entire session. I guess that really dates me.

I think you know me better than that. It was a rather long winded way to
say that i don't have a clue what you are referring to. If you would like
to start the previous section over again so that we can better understand
each other, I would be willing to give it a go.

That is a true statement and one that I wholly agree with in the vast
majority of cases. However, having said that I know that there are those
that prefer to process/modify the sound being reproduced. They like it and
like it a lot. I think it is great that they can do that and that it makes
them happy. That is not for me and it would seem that you don't care for
it either. Put another way, I prefer my music just the way it comes off
the CDP. Nothing added or changed or deleted.

I know you didn't say yes and you didn't say no either but since you
refused to answer it, I felt thatthe question had to be resolved somehow.
Logically I felt it would be the most likely answer.
If your decide to never use any enhancement/modification capabilities if
they exist in your system, I respect your choice in the matter. I however
believe there is a time and a place for everything. While it is rare that
I do modify/enhance the music, I do apply enhancements/modifications
occasionally when trying to correct some technical difficulty.

Really? I fail to see how the qualities of the opera decsribed apply to
all music .
>

As a matter of fact it is all about me and my attempts to communicate the
emotions I feel. You act as if that were a bad thing. Is the attempt to
communicate to another person or persons the emotions one feels when
listening to music offending to you? If so, then I must apologize as I did
not know it would upset you.
In my life I have discovered that what I like *is* what I like. Others
may, or may not, like what I like. I respect that. Some may consider this
respect for others to be socially undesireable, but showing and more
importantly, actually having respect for others and their choices is just
the way I am. I cannot change that nor do I wish to.
The only real problem I have is when people try to tell me what I should
like, should not like, or what opinion I should have. It is at that point
in time that I feel that others are denying me certain rights and freedoms.
If I offend you by assuming too much or too little then I apologize. I
believe it is due to the fact that I don't know your experiences or
preferences that well and due to my deficiencies in that area, it would
seem that it causes issues. Please accept my apologies.

Ah! I've read that some actually like the fake-stereo reissue I have on
lp. I don't have a mono to compare, but I'm reasonably happy with what I
have.
De Los Angeles is wonderful. She always gets me with "senza rancor".

The CD I have is indeed mono so this reissue has not been tampered with.
Just to be sure I checked with the oscilloscope and it agrees with the
"Mono" designation on the CD and my ears.

I found a post describing the lp as "pseudo-stereo," with the original
mono orchestra spread over the two channels and the voices placed
wherever the producer thought best for portraying the action onstage.
Chances are the pseudo-stereo won't be reissued, but in this case the
method gives a better effect than most fake stereo. It might be fun to
have the original format with orchestra in one channel and the voices in
the other, especially for home mix/synthesize/remaster types.

What I used was a Hughes AK100 to enhance the mono. It gave the
spaciousness of stereo but it couldn't help the imaging. Better than
nothing but I enjoyed the effect anyway.

I can't imagine better a inspector ! ;-)
Note that since Richman has leaved you are my main visitor.
Does your mama know that his big chicken son spends days and nights in the
sewers ?

you don't understand that the poverty statistic is just that,
a statisitc, and is deformed from the real life situation.
Poverty statistics between different nations cannot be readily
compared to each other without also having a solid reference to
reality. Poverty statistics for one nation refer to
the relative distribution of that one country's income.
Thus, in an almost exclusively Communist country such as Cuba,
there can be maasive abject poverty, yet, statisitically,
very few Cubans live in 'statistical' poverty. Should you want to
compare apples and oranges, as you compare US to France,
then, instead, compare France to Cuba. By your arguments,
a much lower percentage of Cubans live in 'statistical'
poverty than Frechman live in statistivcal poverty.
I think you should relocate to Cuba, and become a
sewer inspector there, should that country be fortunate
enough to even have enough sewers for you to inspect.

What arguments ?
Did I give you any arguments ?
Can you quote one of my arguments ?

When a guy cannot eat correctly and have a house to be
protected from rain and from cold he is poor... This as
nothing to do with the country income.
You are an idiot and one more time you prove it publicly.

Why do you write "we" and "our" ?
Do you pretend that your crappy opinions are the reflect of
an "American thinking" ?
You belong to a tiny minority Scott, hopefully for the USA
and for the world, scarry môrons like you are marginal.
Be courageous for once and take care of *YOUR* problems like
the real man you pretend to be.

Are you prepared to face the massive in your face laughter that will

Arnii is going to hand out little thank-you gifts to the audience. They
will be truly memorable tokens (if somewhat malodorous).

Scott, I figure you're about as good predicting the behavior of a room
full of audiophiles as you were at predicting the behavior of the
California Superior Court.

In the Superior Court of the State of California, and without
personally lifting a finger. With you Scott, my
implemented-public-humiliation-of Scott-to-effort ratio has been
infinite.

Like I said, in your fantasies. You are still too delusional to
understand what really happened. Oh well. In the unlikely event that
you show up to the debate you will probably be too delusional to
understand what happened there as well. Here's a hint. When they laugh
it will be at you not with you.
