View Full Version : Recording vinyl

I've had a look around Google Groups and this seems to be one of the
more active groups, but if I'm in the wrong place could someone tell me
where to post this.

I have a bunch of vinyl records. I want to record them to CD.
I have a record deck. I have a PC with a CD burner and software.

So far so good.

The record deck is a cheap one. There is no output socket except the
headphone jack. The speakers are on bellwire and held in by those
little red and black clips that you push with your finger, insert the
wire and then let go to clamp it in.

Before I start moving stuff around and buy some cable to connect PC to
record deck I thought I'd get some advice.

Am I going to be OK plugging a cable between the PC's microphone socket
and the record deck's headphone socket?

Or do I need to do something more involved?

That's the red jack, right? That's probably going to be susceptible to
overload.

You want to plug the proposed cable into a blue line input jack.

Well, it seems like your bottom-feeding here, but if you do things right you
will get *something* that sounds at least a little like the original LP.

Good point about the PC-side connection. There probably is a more
suitable "line-in" socket thann the microphone. I'll pull the desk out
from the wall and have a proper look.

Assuming there is a line-in, does the panel think the output from the
headphone socket on the record deck (built-in amp) would give a
recordable sound?

Should I perhaps chop the end off the PC-Record Deck cable and try to
connect it to the speaker clamps?

Or is there a better way of doing this without the luxury of a proper
Line Out on the record deck?

It has every time I tried it and got the levels set right.

I don't see why you would want to do that.

Try the headphone jack.

Thanks for your help. I'll check out the sockets and go and get a cable
this weekend probably.

If anyone else has got any advice, get in quick before I screw this up!
