Still trying to decide on components for a stereo for a new truck, and still
have a couple of questions:
Is it a bad idea to mix 3 way (fronts) and 2 way (rear) speakers?
If I buy a 4 channel Amp, can I use 2 channels to run the fronts, 2 channels
bridged to run a sub, and use the head unit internal Amp to run the rears?
If the above config is workable, do I need a head unit with 2 or 3 preouts?
I'm guessing 2....

No, it won't hurt anything to mix three ways, two ways.
Yes, you can run fronts and sub off of a 4 channel and the rears off
of the head unit. Thats fine.
Get a head unit with dedicated sub pre outs. Almost all head units
except the low end stuff has these. It will give you more control over
your subs. Sub level, crossover, etc.

The head unit I'm looking at is a Pioneer DEH- P7700MP. It does have 3
preouts- including one for the sub.
Have been looking for ratings on Amps- what is Phoenix Gold's reputation?
Not looking for anything outrageous- about 40-60W RMS x 4 Channels.

There ok. Also MTX, Rockford Fosgate, Alpine, Kicker make similar
quality amps.

Ok, just went to the last car audio place in town. He checked out what was
in the truck from the factory and said I didn't need to change out the
speakers (they are separate midrange and tweeters). He said I would be very
surprised at the quality of sound if I would put in an head unit with decent
power and add a modest single channel amp with a sub. He had a MTX 10 in sub
(202 Thunder) and an MTX amp to match. The head unit recommended was an
Eclipse cd3434. I've been able to find the specs, but no reviews on the
unit. My understanding is that Eclipse makes good equipment, but I've never
dealt with it before.
One thing about going this route is I can always change out the speakers if
I don't like the initial result.
I was surprised to find the guy NOT trying to sell me speakers, telling me
to try the factory installs with a new head unit first. And his boss was
standing there agreeing with him.

I'm surprised they said that also. As long as the Factory speaker are not
blown then that will work fine. And you can always upgrade the speakers
later.

Thats right Chevy now uses seperates in their doors. My friend upgraded
to Infinity Reference components and the fit pretty easy.
Elcipse are very nice decks. They are more expensive than say Pioneer.
The face does not come off. IMO you get more features for your money
with a Alpine or Pioneer. Just my 2 cents.
Also if you get a sub, make sure you get a box that fits specifically
for your truck. There are a ton of boxes that are made to fit under the
rear seats etc. No need for a generic sqaure box that takes up space.
