View Full Version : Subs Amp Quality - D Class mono

Just out of curiosty, right now I have my 2 JL Audio 10w0's in a
sealed box running off a Rockwood Fos 401s. It's a 2 channel amp that
supplies more than enough power to the sub box.
Now, my question is, I didn't spend much on this amp, AND i see amps
at Future Shop like the MTX MXA6001 D class 1 channel amp going for
$600 cdn! What gives? What would this amp do to my subs? Is it just
more power for bigger subs? What about the infinity 310A for $200?
Are there big differences in these amps for subs since they are all
mono channel? I just don't see that my subs would sound better by a
different amp? Is it possible?

Well, if you are happy with your current setup, then I suppose there's
nothing to worry about, right?
The cool thing about Class D amps is that they are more efficient (70-80%
efficient) than traditional Class AB (50-60% efficient) amps. This is
particularly important for sub amps that can suck so much current. For
instance, if you are using the stock electrical system in a Honda Accord the
most an Accord alternator can put out is about 80 amps. The car demands
about 50 which leaves 30 for the stereo. A big 700 watt Class AB amp can
draw as much as 50-60 amps, creating a deficit. A Class D, on the other
hand, can produce that same 700 watts and consume only 30-40 amps, giving
you more bass!

The cooler operation gives you more mounting options too. It can go
where a Class AB convection cooled amp wouldn't fit or where a forced
air amp would suck in too much dirt.
But if you don't need Class D, the Class AB amps have better sound
quality for the money.

What makes you think different brand make different? Only think
you have to make choice is the price, not on the quality. it's matter
of how much you spend. Of course, $600 unit is different from $200
unit.
Today most amp is designed and manufactured in China. so they are
mostly
compatible to one another as far as price same. So it is the price
that makes different sound. More expensive, the better sound you have.

What are you talking about, know-nothing? Just how many amps have you
bought in the past 5 years? How many amps have you designed or built or
even repaired? How many amps have you installed?
Can't you take a hint? No one is interested in reading your drivel.

Have you been to a local "stereo" shop lately that has cell phone signs
in the window? Spending more money doesn't equal more quality. Spending
more money _wisely_ equals better quality.

That's not a web site. It's a sales pitch for you to buy that guy's book.
