Hi,

For anyone using XM satellite radio in car:

Thinking of buying, but don't like the idea of having an outside antenna,

Salesman said that due to the sharp angle of windshield (2004 Accord), if
the antenna is
placed on the dashboard, it will have a good view of satellite, and play
very well.

a. Is this true that it would be "substantially" the same as a car roof
placement ? Noiticeable difference ?

b. Does using an fm transmitter degrade the sound to a noticeable extent ?

c. If I do go to the outside placement, how can one lead the antenna wire
inside:
e.g., are there flat coax or special lead wires that can sneak thru a trunk
or window crack ?
How is it done ?

d. Can an antenna be painted ?

Much thanks,
Bob

Thanks,
Bob

Hi ,
I have Sirius rather than XM, but I think some of what I encountered
should apply to XM too.
a) An installer, thru this NG told me that he had success mounting the
antenna on the rear shelf for the same reasons you state. I tried it and
found it to work well ('96 328i). On my 70 mile round trip to work I had 3-4
momentary drop outs but that's it. I remounted to the roof and still have
pretty much the same performance.
I'm very happy with it.

b) Some people in this NG have complained about FM transmitters. It sounds
like hard wire is better. I had a small aftermarket transmitter for my CD
walkman and it wasn't too good. Lot's of interference, plus depending on
where I was I'd have to change stations. A real pain.

c) The antenna wire is very fine. Very easy to install. Check out the
Crutchfield web site. Lots of good info and antenna install demo pics.

d) I don't know about painting.

Good luck!

My sirius antenna is mounted on the back shelf just in front of my 3rd brake
light on the rear deck. It works great.
