Head Unit -- No Sound

Today, I started my car and got no sound out of my head unit
(Kenwood). The display lights up just fine, however. I have my sub
hooked up to a separate amp from my Polk separates, so I thought that
if one of the amps had gone bad, I'd still hear a signal from the
remaining good amp. However, there is no sound at all through the
speakers. The other day, I started the car, and had to wait for about
fifteen seconds longer than usual for the sound to come through the
speakers.

I don't have a lot of knowledge of car audio, but does this sound like
the head unit itself might have died?

Update:

Add-on: Tonight I turned the radio off and then back on again. The
sound appeared for a couple of seconds, but as soon as I raised the
volume, the sound cut off again, so I'd guess it's not the receiver
itself. However, when the radio is on and the sound is out, I *do*
hear a faint sound coming from the back of the car where the amps are.
It's a cyclic high-pitched sound; it cycles about once a second. The
sound is akin to the sound made when stretching the neck of a balloon
really tight and letting air out of it. Sorry, but that's the closest
I can come to describing the sound.

disconnect the battery and check the wiring of the amp, namely the speakers
maybe you mixed them up

Thanks, but I found the problem. The positive terminal to my car
battery was all crudded up, so I cleaned it up and replaced the
terminal clamp. Everything's fine now.
