I recently bought a used Clarion DXZ615 head unit to replace the
cheese-dick pionneer in my 89 taurus. However, the process has ran
into some bumps; the sound keeps cutting in and out. The power seems
to be good, it comes on and plays normally, but the audio from all 4
speakers seems to play fine, and then all of a sudden just dissapear
for awhile, and then comes back. Theres doesn't seem to be any
phsyical reason for it; wiggling the cables, joslting of the HU, bumps
in the car, etc, seem to have no effect one way or the other. The
friend I bought it off of swears to (and I can attest to) that the
problem did not exist when he had it in his car. Theres no amplifier,
or premium sound BS, just the HU driving the four speakers. I can hear
hum from the speakers when the unit is on, and they crackle when I
wiggle the antenna cable. I can't think of anything that would make
ALL the sound cut out at once, unless it was a problem inside the
player. If anybody has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd appriciate it.

First check the voltage going into radio +12. Check during the audio
sound is disappeared. If you see less than +12 or no volt, then there
is a problem of power. If there is +12 when the sound is gone,
something
is wrong inside of the radio.

problem fixed, turns out it was the ground wire; or lackthereof
specifically. Turns out that the first generation taurus's (tauri?)
don't have ground wires on the radio harness, so the ground wire from
the HU was going nowhere. a quick eye-lug and bolt to the frame, and
it's playing fivers. Beats the hell out of me how it was even working
at all, maybe grounding through the case itself? thanks for the help

it was grounding through the antenna.
that's why you heard the crackle sound when you wiggled it.
