View Full Version : Best bazooka sub location in '96 Explorer?

I just installed a Bazooka EL8A 8" amplified sub in my 1996 Ford
Explorer. Does anyon ehave any recommendations on the best location
for it? Now I have it just behind the rear seat facing back towards
the rear hatch due to wire length restrictions, but I'm willing to
extend the wires if there is a better location for it.
Thanks.
I had a 10" tube in my Explorer. I found the best bas is pointed
towards the passenger side up against the hatch. so when you open the
hatch, the woofer is about 4" away from the passenger side panel, and
the tub itself close to the hatch as possible. Your trying to 'corner'
load the sub as much as possible. Sorry if it doesnt make sense.

Thank you very much. If I understand correctly, the tube goes as far
back towards the hatch as possible and the woofer opening should point
towards the passenger side panel and be about 4" away from it. Correct?
I wonder how that same general scenario would sound but with the tube
against the rear of the back seat? This way I would not have to extend
my wires as far.
You could try and im sure it will work. Plus my way takes up cargo
space. Its just that in order to squeeze every DB out of the sub, you
want to corner load it. Have it as close to the corner as possible.
Mess around and see what you like.

you should pack the whole location with bigger size sub.
Bigger the better louder booming sound.

Exactly!! This little sub meets my needs just fine. I have no desire
to go "thumping" down the road, all I want is some decent bass response
which is impossible to get from even good quality (Boston Acoustics)
5x7 door speakers. Just a little more Phil is all...the music never
stops.
Bob, Also mess around with the distance from the subs face to the
paneling. Closer yields tighter bass, further yields boomier bass. I
liked mine about 4".

Great advice, thanks. Now the bass is quite boomy, most likely I guess
due to the sub's face being about a foot from the rear hatch because
that's only as far as my wires will allow. I will defintely have to
lengthen some wires to give me the flexibility to try different
locations.
Thanks again!

Bigger and Louder is NOT better. I have a friend who think this and his
system sounds like crap. Any kind of music played on his stereo doesn't
sound right at all.

So right you are, Sean! I have no desire for my system to be bigger
and louder. My only goal in installing this sub was to simply give me
the source material's low bass that the 5x7 Boston Acoustics mounted in
the doors are unable to produce, or at best, produce poorly. Now those
Bostons are much happier since I have my amp's output to them high
passed so they don't get anything below 100 Hz.

I've got the same exact sub and love it. I was a bit dissappointed in the
"amount" of bass, but love the quality of it. I bought an adjustable line-level
amplifier and run my sub-outs to the amp and then from there to the bazooka.
Fabulous combination and you get a nice "nothing-at-all to way-too-much"
adjustment without having to click through 15 steps on the head unit to get to
the sub-level adjustment (which is inadequate anyway).
One of my biggest problems with all sound adjustments in general, but with bass
in particular is how widely varying the source recordings are. You adjust for
one recording and it sounds fine and then some other song comes on and there's
either nothing or the windows are shaking. I've absolutely got to have an
adjustment in a handy dash mounted position.
Thats true in any sub setup. Play Fat Joes Lean Back and then 3 Doors
Down Kryptonite. I have to adjust my sub level from +1 to +5 to keep
the bass the same.
