I want to get a 20GB or higher MP3 player and feel that the iPOD is not
worth it, What OTHER MP3 players in this size category are out there and
worth looking at?

Still high priced but I like the store any file deal and the longer battery
life. I think I may actually pick up this model. Thanks for the link.

Keep in mind that the "store any file" thing just means that the
iRiver can be used as an external hard drive. As far as I know, *all*
of the hard drive-based music players have this capability. So,
although it's a nice feature, don't feel that you have to go with the
iRiver to get it.

If you want a lower price, you can check out the RCA Lyra 20 GB, the
Dell DJ20, or the Rio Karma 20 GB. They're all 20 GB player, and they
can be had for $200-$250 new. I've never used them, so I can't
recommend any of them.

You're welcome. I really like my iPods, but I'm no Apple zealot. I'm
glad that there are so many choices out there for music players - it
keeps the price down and the innovation up. When I think about how
miserable my 20GB Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox was to use, I appreciate
how far we've come with the iPod, iRiver, and similar players.

Another brand, although a bit more money but a lot more features, is Archos.
One thing that attracted me to them was that their AV420 does not have a
built-in battery where you would need to send the built-in battery player
off to get a new battery installed when it fails to take a charge or doesn't
last as long. I picked up a spare snap-on lithium battery from NewEgg.com.
for $29 and in a few seconds I'm back up and running instead of looking for
a charger or docking it.

I have the AV420 and it is great. Very fast boot-up (less than 8 seconds),
awesome sound, and I can play and record movies on it. My mp3 files show
the cover art along with the song as well. Never has hard-drive crashed on
me...yet. Only thing I do not like is the small built in speaker is
worthless and sounds like crap. I upgraded their phones to Etymotic's canal
phones with a pair of Sensaphonic custom molded tips (something that
improves about "any" player). Sound is excellent and I can ascertain no
white (i.e. amplifier) noise as I get from my iRiver flash player. It is
just silent and the hard-drive is quiet as well. I can even load my camera
pictures off the CompactFlash card directly into the player's HD through the
built-in CF slot. As mentioned, I can also use it like a Tivo and do a
direct from a DVD player into the unit for an on-the-go AVI (compressed)
movie.

As mentioned, it is more money (list is ~$550) and the color screen is
larger. It will fit into a larger pocket shirt or jacket. I've seen them
as low as $480 (K-Mart online). Also is their 80 gig unit (with built-in
battery for ~$750. They are coming out with a newer model (PVP400 I think,
but is around $800 and has a touch-screen which I'm afraid I'd mark-up as
well as a SD card socket). Reviews off Epinions.com have been favorable as
well.

I should be good for another year...as technology goes.

That is not the only feature I like, I also like the four hours longer
battery life over the iPod and don't want to mess with iTunes and also heard
of some minor compatibility issues with PCs. However minor they may be I'd
rather just try something else. The color screen is nice too.

On a side note, I have a cell phone with a bluetooth wireless headset, I
don't suppose any mp3 players out there can be used with a bluetooth
wireless headphones? If they even exist ;p

The only other MP3 player I've spent a lot of time with was one of the
first-generation Creative Labs Nomad Jukeboxes. It was a piece of
crap for many reasons. I won't go into detail, since that model's not
being produced anymore and you don't have to worry about it.

I have two iPods - a 2nd-generation 20GB and a third-generation 40GB.
I use both of them with PCs and iTunes, and have never had a single
problem or compatibility issue with either one. They just work. That
being said, if there are other model you like better (the colour
screen on the iRiver DOES sound nice), then go for it.

A lot of these MP3 players end up being used in cars. I know I use
the hell out my iPod in the car. Some of them are better-suited for
car use than others, as well.

The whole point of me getting an MP3 player is so I can put all of my mp3s
on it and not have to take any CDs with me in my car.

Ok, I get what you're saying, but when every other damn post on this group
is "How Do I Connect My iPod to My Head Unit?", I think you need to realize
that portable MP3 players are here to stay in this forum.
