View Full Version : What is High Definition Radio

Does anyone know anything about HD radio? I heard that some radio
stations were going to switch over to it, but I have no idea what it
is?

AFAIK, it is a gimmick. There is no higher definition and it involves
digital transmission conveniences for the broadcaster.

It is not a "gimmick" in the negative sense. It is real and is an
improvement. It can bring FM quality sound to AM stations and raise FM to
near CD quality.

If this is just the IBOC initiative, there is considerable evidence that the
result is sonically inferior to the best of conventional FM, the culprit
being the codec.

Hi Bob!!!
There is a significant improvement for AM transmissions. As far as FM is
concerned the relative merits of the Ibiquity system appears to raise the
bar as far as potential quality is concerned. More real advantages will
be better realized when DSP processing is applied directly to the 88-108
Mhz RF signal. TI Semiconductor has made some inroads into DSP processing
for RF. TI has more than one solution for designers wishing to pursue HD
Radio.
I have yet to hear a radio station that would be worse off by adopting HD
Radio with the possibility of one exception. That exception may be WFMT
in Chicago. There may be others but I don't believe they are outside of
the top 5 markets.
If the codec is truly at fault, then better software will likely resolve
any current issues.
