View Full Version : Misc Speaker hum / buzz

Here's a strange situation that is driving me nuts...

At first I had a Cambridge computer speaker emitting an occasional buzz. It
was always the right speaker so I swapped it with the left one but the buzz
remained with the right speaker. I then connected a older portable radio to
the output of the (SB Audigy) which left the desktop speakers connected to
nothing but the Cambridge Soundworks amp and I still heard the buzz. So the
soundcard was eliminated & believing I had a bad amp I decided to ignore the
small annoyance.

However.... It was about a week ago when I was downstairs and the laptop
(with small speakers) that's sitting on the coffee table all of a sudden
emitted a similar buzz. At first I thought I imagined it so I ignored it.
BTW... the laptop is plugged into the wall and I have a wireless connection
to it via a Linksys router.

Then... in the past couple of days a small portable radio that's in the
kitchen has also emitted the same buzzing sound.

One other thing I've also noticed is that on occasion I get a very tinny or
echoey (is that a word <lol>) sort of sound out of my home theatre
equipment.

At first I thought it was the computer equipment but with these other
circumstances I now wonder if there's something on the household AC that's
affecting electronics / speakers? Or maybe a high powered transmitter
somewhere nearby? I'm at a complete loss as to what I should be looking
for.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

David...

If it's just an occasional buzz, it might be your cell phone answering a
poll from the mothership. Seriously, have you ever heard this annoyance? I
have to keep my phone away from all of my audio equipment. It emits a buzz
that is picked up by my laptop, my stereo...any equipment with a sound
system within a few feet. Do they ban them from studios these days?

Sometimes it's actually handy. The cell phone buzzes before it starts
ringing. If I keep it hung on the car dash, I hear the buzz in the stereo
in time to have the phone in hand by the time it actually rings.
