I am in the market for a new portable CD player as my trusty Sony CD
Walkman purchased in late 2000, recently died.
Last month I picked up a Panasonic Shockwave SL-W965V and it leaves
much to be desired.
Don't get me wrong the Shockwave 965 is great if you listen mostly
music that contains heavy bass, and like for the vocals to be up front
(RAP).
Personally, I listen to guitar driven hard rock and the Shockwave 965
just cannot process this type of music properly.
Bass & Vocals over power the guitars and the drums, and I have to
train my ears to make out guitar sounds that are usually very easy to
detect on my Hi-Fi System.

Definitely want a player with an adjustable equalizer, and optional
digital signal processing effects.
MP3s encoded at high bit rates sound very good at on the shockwave but
mp3s encoded with older encoders from years ago, sound like over
processed noise.
Not big on mp3s, but I wouldn't mind having the choice to play MP3 CDR
if I so desired.

I use my portable around 3-4 hours a day during the work week, and
want to get the most bang for my buck.

I assume that a new generation of portable CD players will be unveiled
at the CES this weekend.

Perhaps I should wait until the spring when the next generation hits
the stores?

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
