I mean, just because I might want something does not mean everyone
else should. In fact it would take the fun out of it. However, the
process behind eccentric endeavors, like serious audio reproduction, is
more interesting and ultimately more important than the finished
product.

Truth is, many people simply don't care about narrow hobbies
that fire the hobbyists and are even turned off by the snobbishness,
jargon, and pushiness they may encounter.

The way audiophiles have raved about or ranted against wires, green
pens, tubes, etc., you could forgive an average person for concluding
this is was a bunch of kooks.

Anyway, he have other concerns, and Bose may just fit the mix he is
looking for.

I am an audiophile but I decorate my apartment with simple posters
and use basic Wal-Mart cookware. My friends who are passionate
about art or cooking feel the same way about me as I do about their
stereo systems. :)

We may know how to get good sound, but we cannot make a good
case that everyone should care about it as much as we do.

Seems pretty practical to me.

I still maintain that the weakest link in the audio chain is speakers. If
you can't get them to produce flat FR with inaudible distortion you won't
hear what is on the recording as it was intended to be heard. Some argue
that they want to hear what sounds good to them, and that's all well and
good, but it not Hi-FI IMO, it is another hobby involving electronic
reproduction of sound, maybe it should be called something like EME,
Electronic Musical Enjoyment.

For me there is still nothing quite like hearing a really good recording of
music that gives the illusion of space you can walk around in. Something
that makes it seem as if you could reach out and touch the musicians and
their instruments. I was listening to a local jazz station KCLU and heard a
couple of tunes like that this evening, but due to the requirements of a
demanding 5 year old, didn't get to hear who the artist(s) was/were. There
was one vocal performance by a female with a deep husky voice doing a cover
of Wichita Lineman that maybe someone is familiar with and could name.

Anyway good luck with your DIY ventures, I just don't know that a SS amp is
a suitable project for a beginner, as I assume you are. Tube stuff is
easier and cheaper if you make a mistake, and SS stuff is more expensive to
build as DIY than you can buy it for ready made. That same web site I
mentioned earlier www.diyaudio.com has lots of useful information and links
to all sorts of DIY projects.
