Apparently today is the 100 year birthday of the tube or valve.

So let's all wish the old coot a big happy B-day---but don't give him
the bumps!

And thank Edison for ignoring that one-way current between a
filament and a plate inserted into a lightbulb, as it gave Fleming and
de Forest (and a few other people) things to develop and invent.
According to this site, we've got a couple more years before
celebrating the invention of the triode, a tube that actually
amplifies something, and eventually gave birth to Rock and Roll music:
