I have a 1960's AKG D12 that has had a new capsule installed by AKG in
Nashville. The mic came back sounding great, and it became my A kick
mic. After only a few sessions, but unfortunatly several months, a
distortion appeared in the sound at high SPL's. I sent the mic back
to AKG, but they no longer work on this model. I find myself in a bad
situation with this mic. Ihave some money invested in it, and it is
just setting in my mic case. If anyone has any ideas on where I can
get the mic repaired, or if someone wants to buy or trade for it
please contact me.

As far as I know, nobody out there is repairing dynamic capsules. All
the manufacturers will do is to replace the element itself. So if you
have a separated coil or a coil that is rubbing, the mike is basically
trash.
Sadly this goes for the EV 666 and 664 mikes, as well as almost all other
dynamics more than a decade out of production.
If anybody out there starts doing this sort of work, I'd love to know
about it. I have a dozen 421Ls here that could be fixed in five minutes
by changing the diaphragm assembly, but Sennheiser will only sell me a
new element for $250 each and not the replaceable diaphragm.

** I have a few D12 ( same as D19 & D707 ) diaphragms - it it one of
the few mics where it is easy to replace the diaphragm since it is held in
place by a brass ring and a few tiny screws.
Very often distorted output is due to metal particles that have become
trapped on the edge of the diaphragm by the pull of the magnet gap - these
can be removed with care by a small screwdriver.

My D12E started making a fluttering sound awhile back. I left it alone for a
year and now it's ok again...strange. Good to know it's easy to work on

Phil,
Thanks for the information in the D12. I'll see if that does the trick.

In the late 90's AKG made a limited run of replacement capsules as a
part of an anniversary promotion. Contact AKG Vienna, they may still
have the part...
