View Full Version : Yet more Drum Micing decisions

Hi folks,
I'm trying to expand my horizons when it comes to drum micing. I have
done several recordings using standard close micing techniques with
excellent results. This time i'd like to step outside my comfort
area. I'm recording a drummer on some material than spans folk,
blues, rock/pop, acoustic singer-songwriter (god I hate that term...)
styles. I have 8 inputs available (but some items can be submixed in
a pinch), and a decent big room. I'm looking for a sound with some
space and character and also some flexibility to work with during
mixing. Tracking to a Pro Tools LE setup with a combination of preamps
(RNP, DIGI 002R built ins, and ...um... mackie). The following mics
are at my disposal:
1 Neumann TLM103
1 Shure KSM44
1 Audio Technica 4040
3 SM57's
7 SM 58'ss
1 Shure Beta 52
2 Shure BG 4.1's (small diaphragm cheaper version of SM81)
2 Oktava MC012's (cardioid pattern)
1 Audio Technica "kitpak" set of 4 dynamic drum mics (not too fond of
these so far..)

Some questions running round my head are: Dammit - why don't I have a
pair of either the Neumann or KSM44's? What to use for room sound -
mono large diaphragm or stereo pair of small dias? Spaced pair or XY?
Which mics to use with the RNP/RNC (being a step above the other
pres)? etc etc.
I may not have time to test all possible setups so i'm looking to tap
into the collective wealth of experience of fellow RAP-ers
What would you do?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Dan Fox

For that kind of music I would try some stereo pair tracks, maybe put the
TLM103 on the bass drum and get a nice pair of omni directional small diaphragm
condensers.
I have a pair of AT 3032 SDC's that have done good as a stereo pair out in
front of a small PA system. I paid a bit less than $300.00 US for the pair new,
you may have to do some placement testing to find the right spot to put them
in.

How about the Beta 52 for kick and a 57 for snare. The pair of Oktavas
for overheads.

From there if you're looking to learn a bit, I'd skip the tom mics and
track three mono room mics with the TLM103, KSM44 and the 4040. Then
decide in the mix. Or if you want tom mics, set up that way. Track a
minute or two, choose the best mic and then put up the tom mics.
