Poll: Do you use a DAW in your facility?

I'm gathering some info for a ProTools installation and I'd appreciate
your thoughts and replies on the following questions:


1. Do you use a digital audio workstation in your production
facility/studio?

2. If you do use a workstation, are you using ProTools? If so, which
version? If not, what workstation are you using and, briefly, why?
(i.e. Features? Price? Ease of use?)

3. On what operating system is your DAW based and why? (i.e.
personal preference, ease of use, cost, features?)

4. If you use ProTools for Windows, do you also use a Unity file
server or other storage array? (If "other", please indicate file
server type.)

No. Using Cakewalk Sonar. Fraction of the price, comparable performance.

Windows XP on a system dedicated to Audio. Rock solid. Cost effective.

No. Using DP3 because I used the earlyer version of it (Digital Performer) in
college and like the ease of use with MIDI (never know what I'll run into) and
it will now transfer (basicly) to Pro Tools. If I had more cash when I got it I
would have gotten Pro Tools but I didn't have that much in the bank.

Mac OS 9.2 all of the above and because I have had no need for any up grades
(yet).

Of course!

Pro Tools mix plus + 2 mix farm (old ones)

Mix plus on Mac OS9.2 (I have tons of plugins and I'm trying to swich to
OSX)
I master on a ProTools LE on Windows XP that I also use for backup.

Yes. Several.

We have four pro tools systems: an HD/3, a Mix system, and 2 LE systems. The
two other engineers who work here also have Pro Tools systema at home which we
bring in as necessary, one has a Mix system and the other has a 002/LE system.
All the systems in the facility are 6.2 or higher on OSX machines, except one
Mbox LE system in a video editing room which runs on a Dell/WinXP machine.

We like how PT works with Panther. The one XP box will be replaced by a G5
next month. Tyhe machines network well and seem to be as stable as a word
processor-trying-to-be-a-recorder can be.

No. We back up to hard drives during the project and archive to DVD at the end
of the project.

Yes, I have 2

I use Cakewalk Sonar4 (for midi and audio) and Protools LE 6.4 w/Digi002 for
audio only projects.

Sonar on PC w/XP I alternate with PTLE sometimes on a Mac w/OSX and
sometimes with Windows XP depending on the application. I get a higher
plug in count with a PC, so I reserve its use when mixing (in the box). I
use the Mac when I'm tracking. When I mix outboard, I use the Mac.

I have a Linux server (using Samba) which contains copies of all projects.
This allows me to load Protools projects either into a PC or Mac. Its
cheap, stuffed with big drives and has been running flawlessly for over 2
years.

Depends. First define "digital audio workstation" and then I'll know
how to answer your question. Or maybe you can answer for me.

I do multitrack recording on a Mackie HDR24/96. I have occasionally
done some editing on it but not often enough to depend on it. I
usually mix through an analog console to DAT, then transfer the mixes
to a computer for assembly. If any of that is a "digital audio
workstation" then I use one. Otherwise no.

I suppose that I'm in the same boat. I'm a pretty firm believer that my
work shouldn't hit a computer or a hard drive until it's 95% completed
already. Once there (in a 2-track editor), I do as little as possible to
edit and 'pre-master' the work for a mastering house.

If a 2-track editor is a DAW (which it was called long before hard drive
multitracking software), then I have several.

Pro Tools 6.2 on a Mac G4
Pro Tools 6.4 on a WinXP laptop.

One is on a Mac (OSX), the other is on WinXP. The reasons for each
choice were many, but they're completely irrelevant because there ain't
a lick of difference between the two. I go back and forth between the
two all day and can find no compelling reason whatsoever to recommend
one platform over the other. Go with whichever fits your personal
preference or facility requirements.

If you're asking whether we use mass storage, the answer is no. The
stuff we do is mostly disposable, so we just use a firewire drive to
hang onto stuff until it's obsolete. We are connected to some kind of
Windows network though, for moving files between Avid and FCPro and Pro
Tools.

I use Sonar 4 as the main application, but I also use Sound Forge 6,

Why? Geez... at least partially because when Commodore went belly up I
had to choose a new platform, and things weren't looking all that good
for Apple at the time, so I went with Wintel. Most of my Wintel using
friends used Cakewalk and Sound Forge, so that's what I had driving time
on, and even after working with a number of other product demos, they
won. Since then I've added tools that had particular capabilites as I've
needed them. Lately I've been trying to reduce the audio editor
collection to one... but I'm not there yet.

I have used PT in other studios, and there are some cool things that it
can do, but Sonar seems to be catching up on some of the more useful (to
me) tricks.

Also should mention that I seldom record directly to the computer,
though lately I've been giving a whirl. Mostly I record to either an
analog tape deck or a stand-alone hard disk recorder. Just seems to work
better for me.

And, I suppose I should also note that I don't do a lot of audio
editing... but then even when all I had was a tape deck I didn't do all
that much editing. I still like to try for that elusive great take!

Windows XP for Sonar and Windows 2K for GigaStudio (though that will
change when I upgrade GS).

Again with the why? See above, but after getting orphaned on one dumb
platform I figured it was easier to just go with the flow. The chances
of MS or Intel going completely bust are pretty small, and even though
Apple is healthy today, they have had some bleak times, and it could
happen again.

Oddly enough, it wasn't all about the money, though replacing all my
applications was painful... it was mostly about having to learn all
these new tools. Don't really want to have to do that wholesale again<G>!

I have seriosuly considered adding a PTLE rig to the arsenal, and if I
do it'll probably be on a Mac, just to add a little variety.

(FWIW, I do still keep an Amiga running B&P Pro and Texture in the
studio, it just doesn't get a heavy workout!)

Interesting question... even though I don't use PT, I have been
researching Storage Area Networking quite a bit. Did a lot of it in a
previous day gig, and it would solve a LOT of challenges. I don't think
I'd bother with the expense of one of the pre-packaged solutions simply
because I am cheap (I'd rather spend the money on guitars and
microphones) and, I can do it myself!
