Best back up option for Pro Tools 5.1 on Mac G4

[groundhog]

Can someone pls give me some advice on best backup options for backing
up the songs on a Pro Tools 5.1 Apple G4 9.0

From the point of view of the studio would it be best to have some
sort of external hard disk storage system - that can be stored
elsewhere for security ??


Secondly for artists that would like a copy of their song data - would
a DVD burner be the best option??

Any advice or recommendations of equipment would be gratefully
recieved

What's been your experience so far with FireWire reliability? We've had some
problems with drive failures that make me less than confident about them.

I have had no problems at all from the ones we order from OWC. I cannot say
that about others brands, but those have been rock-solid. As far as backing
stuff up, I still think that a tape backup is the way to go. I use the VXA
drive and again I have never had any problems with it.

with a firewire bay and a removable carrier into which you can install
an inexpensive IDE drive.

It depends on why the artist wants a copy of their data and what media
they can use. If it's just for safekeeping, a DVD should be fine. At
least for the next 10 years or so.

We back up any new data daily to FW external drives and have had no
problems. We also occasionally dump big projects to DVD. Quality DVD
blanks are now less than a buck each.

And when a project is completed, we provide the whole thing to them on
DVD's and put aside another copy for our library.

You wanna have your stuff over backed up!! Be sure to take one of the
back ups off site.

Three or four month into a year long project I bought a brand new
firewire drive with an Oxford 911 chip. I was the fourth or fifthe
drive I gto from a reputable manufacturer and all my previoud drives
had been left on and running for 2 years. 5-6 months after transfering
everything to the new drive and making a backup, the new drive had a
head crash. When I went to the backup drive that had a powersupply
failure and killed the third, new, drive I bought. It cost me $1700 in
data recorvery and I got everything back.

My point is, I do thing firewire drives are a pretty good form of
storage. But, disaster really can strike anytime. Have you ever heard
Ruper Neve's sorty about the channels where Geoff Emerick could hear a
problem above 20k? Even the best analog gear can fail. So, if you
really care back up.

Also, Office Depot seellse fireproof safes for $49 that are about the
size of an Igloo cooler. I keep one at home with my important HD back
ups.

their own external drive. That's only been a couple projects so far (since I
got PT online); I've had a number of smaller things that in that case I backed
up to DVD. DVD is a useful storage size (5 gig or whatever it is) and the
media are cheap. It's slow, but hey... i'm charging by the hour and if that's
how they want to do the backup, so be it. Ends up costing them $15-20 this
way.

I use external Firewire drives for backup. I suspect that might even be
a cost-efficient solution, but frankly my primary motivation in choosing
it was sheer convenience. Plug in, drag, drop, the end.

For clients who want to retain their original session data
(surprisingly, most of my clients don't), I tell them to bring me their
Firewire drive and I'll dump it over. So far only one didn't already
have his own. I told him he could go buy one or I would supply him one
at cost. He came back with one the next day.
