For those in the Rocky and Bullwinkle or the Peace, Love, Dope
time zones, Elvis Costello is on Letterman tonight. Sounds a lot
like the original Atractions.

I like Elvis. It's a shame, though, that he's gone and hooked up with
"yoko".

Sorry, but Diana Krall is pretty lightweight stuff. A jazz version of
Celine Dion.

Elvis Costello, while not a jazz, has always been a legitimate artist to me.

So Celine Dion would be a _what_ version of Diana Krall? Pop? Sellout?
Soldermonkey? Just wanna know how low it goes!

Diana Krall's credibility was pretty well established before she
married Elvis Costello. Just because she's a babe and has played
it up doesn't imply that she can't sing or play piano.

Also, I suspect that few in the jazz world where she made her name
first know of her hubby's work. This is the stuff that's important to
Us and People magazines, not fans of decent quality lounge jazz.

Friends who've seen her live in the Humblodt State area say she fronted
a hell of a band and solidly delivered the musical goods. Of course, it

Mike, I agree. I've seen several of her live concerts and I was pretty
impressed. Perhaps she is not on the level of the "greats" like
Ellington, Oscar Peterson, etc. but she can definitely play. Her
singing can at times sound affected, but at times she really swings,
too. When I first heard her on CD back in '97, I wasn't that knocked
out. But then lots of people don't record well. Like I say, live,
she's really quite good.

I do think that the record label probably promotes her via the "easy
on the eyes" method, etc. But I wouldn't write her off just because of
that.

When I first heard (of) her, she was looking at Nat King Cole as a
role model and mentor, singing a lot of his songs and playing in his
style, with a similar trio. But I suppose marketing pressure and the
lure of success brought some changes to her style and material, both
at concerts and in recordings. It happens to everyone in the business
these days. There's little money to be made recording the works of
dead pianist/crooners, no matter how good you are.

I saw him on Regis yesterday (at the car dealer).

He ended the show with P, L & U, but the credits were over before he got
