View Full Version : I tried...

Guys, a very small group of you have made this newsgroup a most unpleasant
place to hang out. You seem to have forgotten that usenet is a world wide
newsgroup, and by hijacking it to promote your own political leanings,
you've alienated a huge part of the readership. None of you have changed a
single mind about their political leanings, or the person that they're going
to vote for, yet you've taken up an inordinate amount of bandwidth defending
your opinions (usually by attacking others). There's much less 'reasoned
debate' here than there used to be, and a whole lot more yelling and finger
pointing. And the bulk of this yelling and finger-pointing has absolutely
NOTHING to do with audio.
I tried to weed out a few unpleasant individuals with a kill file, but
several of the very worst offenders on the political yammering threads are
also guys whose opinions I value when discussing audio. And people who I've
met and liked. Since I'd lose the benefits of their knowledge and experience
by killfiling them.I hesitated to do so. But an audio newsgroup with more
than half of the posts completely unrelated to anything even approaching
audio subjects is worthless to me. So, I'll leave y'all to it.
This used to be a nice neighborhood - one where I spent probably too much
time. Not anymore. Instead, add my name to the very long list of folks who
don't come here anymore.

I'm afraid it's just a reflection of our greater "society" these days. I use
MT-Newswatcher and can easily avoid threads that are not of interest.
Admittedly it's harder from home on a 56k dial-up, but it really doesn't
completely disable the audio content.
To some degree, the political threads are like a car wreck: you don't really
want to see it but can't seem to look away. The old neighborhood is still there
underneath the crap that floats to the top. We've gone through periods of
disruption before and got back eventually.
[Anyway, if you leave, the terrorists win.]

Same for MacSOUP, which keeps RAP feasible on a dialup.

Dave, I'm personally very sorry that you feel this way. I know I have
been one of the people most resposible for political posts in the last
few months. However unlike yourself, I am sort of proud that
rec.audio.pro has so many intelligent regulars who care enough about
what is happening in the world and in the USA, that they will talk
passionately about these issues, which seem so pressing. And, while
we also continue to talk about bass traps and microphones and computer
systems, at times these topics can seem less important in the "big
picture". I think the reason people like to air their political
gripes in here in RAP is that they know they are among people who they
know or who they feel will understand them... kind of a like your
favorite bar or coffee shop, but without the drinks.
Personally, I'm going to try to do a little better in the future. I
certainly prefer your reasoned approach to Ty's attempts at playing
cop.

I sympathise but there's a counter argument to that. The regular posters are
probably interested in the views of those that they know from here.
Maybe there should be an rec.audio.pro.opinion group ?

Ahh, the list. Let's start it up. The list of people who stopped posting
here because of the noise. I will start the list:
John Breglia
Jay Kahrs
These are among the people whose posts I miss.
We are all looking for some magic bullet to deal with the problem. Might
I suggest that those of you who care, really just try your best to not
post followups to any of the real problem areas---politics, or just the
insulting stuff like Phil A.?
That's one way to lower noise. People feed on the reaction their
controversial posts create. If you ignore them, they are more likely
to go away.
Also, if you want to improve S/N the other way is to increase the signal.
Make an effort to actually post audio recording relevant material.
I know, it has all been said before. But can't we get a list going of
former RAPers we would like to see come back?

This list is enormous and has hundreds of people on it, if not thousands.
Many of them have migrated to the pro-audio mailing list, which I can
recommend. It tends to be a lot on the theoretical side, but it is still
interesting. It was created by Gabe Weiner mostly as a result of the huge
drop in S/N here in the mid-1990s.

Go to http://www.recordist.com and follow your nose.
I used to be a fairly active participant, but something happened and I
am no longer able to post to it. I've subscribed using different
addresses and been told that I'm on the "approved poster" list and it
still doesn't like me. Must be because I'm a parrott.
So if you want to go someplace where I'm not, try there. (I still get
the digest and read it, I just can't put in my two cents)

And gets an average of about a post a week. When threads do
start they tend not to be just theoretical but more about
angels dancing on pins. That's what happens when it gets
down to mostly just the good ol' boys stroking each other.

No Al..I haven't. People insist that others "do" things to them and I don't
subscribe to that view. I don't "do" things to others..I live my life..it's
all your perspective..which can be controlled. I would rather have
conversations about possibility than abouthand wringing and blaming. All the
good things I can think of comes from these kinds of conversations.
