In the overnight accumulation, I saw about 250 posts of which more
than 150 were about social/political topics (that I skipped over). I
don't have a problem with social chat about barbecue, coffee, and
scotch, and one mention of Cat Stevens is enough.
Fortunately it's easy to skip over those messages because the subject
headers are so obvious. But I'd rather not have them here at all.

Yea, a worthwhile and meaningful comment.
My killfile is taking up a lotsa space and is added to daily. It would be nice
to see and read topics that relate this newsgroup.
"Professional audio recording and studio engineering" is what the description

I haven't contributed to the political discourse here but I don't
believe that it is a matter of rec.audio.pro being "hijacked".
I write to, follow, lurk, troll, etc. several newsgroups and I have
done so for many years .... this year definitely does feel different
.... ALL the newsgroups I follow have been recently inundated with
political discussion, ramblings, flames, etc.
So, rec.audio.pro, as special as it is, is no different.
While I do think it is better to have separate groups for off-topic
stuff (thanks Ty, etc !), I have come to believe that we are in a
very different time ... our nation is truly divided in a way it has
not been in a long time -- and it is reflected in every aspect of our
society, from the internet, to the nightly news, to the protests in
the streets.
I am going with the flow because the nation is abuzz and people
everywhere can't help themselves from discussing the future ... I
personally don't consider that a "hijacking", I consider it a symptom
of the state of our union.
But, hopefully, things will calm down after the election/next war/next
outrage and we can get back to attacking the release and thresholding
the ratio !
Cheers,
Jordan

We can all leave rec.audio. pro and go to rec.audio. misc.* Leave the
OT posting here at .pro.
Then when OT threads follow us to .misc, we jump back to .pro.
If they follow us back to .pro... more severe measures will need to be
taken. We will have to jump to .opinion and let the locals there eat
our OT posters alive.

That's what I'm talking about and I've even strongly suggested they move it
to rec.audio.misc so they can have their own sandbox. The fact is they are
apparently too stupid to know how to add a newsgroup, to chicken to go to a
newsgroup where people know what they are talking about, or just too
boorish...maybe all of the above.
My best bet is that they have collectively realized they really don't have
any ****ing control over their lives and they see this as a control issue. If
that's what it takes to get their dicks hard, they're in worse trouble than
they could possibly imagine.
Maybe a mass mailing by all of us to fill their mail boxes?

What was that you were saying about control issues? You are
about the only one here clearly evidencing that particular
problem. Seeing control issues in people acting freely is
just projectng your own problem on others. The sentence
above dispels any doubt that you could use some help. It
reeks of delusions of grandeur not to mention promoting an
illegal action. In light of what has hit my mailbox in the
last four or five days you've got me seriously thinking
about walking back the cat.
What about the effect that your huge, repetitive FAQ posting
has on about the only people here who have a legitimate
bitch, those who for some unknown reason download all the
posts to read them? Your behavior is simply petulant and
malicious. You make it all too easy to simply discount your
insufferable self rightousness.
And why, one more time, is your nose even in the threads you
so despise? That is _very_ wierd behavior. You've been
asked that by any number of people. What's up with that?

Bob, Clearly we disagree. It's is you and the other weirdos who have lack of
control issues. You should really get a room...literally and figuratively.
Your assessment that I am self righteous is (as usual) piteously off target.
AS has been pointed out to you many times before, you are the ones pooping on

else.

else.
Unlike you , Bob, when I see a problem, I do more than argue about it in
absurdium in the wrong place.

Losing a Dave Martin in trade for politics doesn't make a whole lot of

This group _can_ be rendered useless to anybody serious about their
audio and music just by remaining so far off-topic so much of the time
that no one who knows a potentiometer from a speaker pedestal will
bother to participate.
Need we subject rec.audio.pro to the tragedy of the commons? Has no one
who would seek to change the world by posting politics here sufficient
restraint to abide by parameters that _allow_ a group to be unmoderated?

Ty, I'd have more respect for your wishes if you go after the other OT
postings about scotch and barbeque as much as you do the political
stuff. Is there something about the political topics that
particularly get under your skin?
How about the long topics that start on-topic but by the 10th reply
have degraded into OT insults and ****ing contests? Some of these go

Usenet charters exist to provide forums for specfic interests; if a
sufficient number of people cannot abide by a charter, a group can
easily descend into the depths if murky uselessness, and we are
certainly skirting the edge of that murk. For a whole lot of very well

Why do you attempt to justify continued and voluminous off-topic
posting? What do you figure you or the group will gain from it?

I cannot imagine why you think your intellect is of sufficient power to
accomplish those goals by posting OT into rec.audio.pro. Certainly there
are more direct and personal ways for you to work toward the stated
goals, which I think are honorable and worthy goals. But I don't see you
making a fly ****'s worth of progress toward those here.

Hank I don't do it just here
and while I have stared one or two OT posts I mostly am just adding the
"other point of view" to the radical rights gung ho love of war posts
locally I am donating about 4000.00 worth of audio and video production
and staging so the debate sept 30 can be shown in our downtown center
I have selfish reasons for my actions
I do not want my son to be drafted or guilted into going to war
I want him to understand it is wholly american to protest injustice
no matter if it is done to us or we are doing it
it mostly comes out here beacuse of the extreme right wing slant of the
posters here
they need to be countered lest other uncommitteded feel the neocon is
the way Americans think
We have hyad several people from other lands(I assume whee one does not
protest thier governments) express surprize that America Is all not
goosestepping to GW's martching orders
it may give them the spark to initate protest in thier homelands
it really is a big picture effort
I have no illusions of changing any hard line neocon to a peaceful POV
but there are others/lurkers who evaluate both sides oof these threads
and benifit from these discussions

And since they are not registered to vote in the US, this helps how? By
now anybody reading the forum knows who is who and what people think.
Why just keep on and on about it when it drives away people seeking the
content of the forum as promised in the charter? I'd trade all this ****
for a Dave Martin.
> it may give them the spark to initate protest in thier homelands
The Brits already mustered a million, the Spaniards and others having
raised their voices, too. Meanwhile, we also have citizens of other
lands wondering why we treat this group as if it were some kind of US
property, blathering continually about things that have little to do
with the forum's intended focus or their own native land. Big picture in
my view is that beyond a certain point of selfrestraint we are just
being ugly Americans in a different way.

By now the lurkers on the fence have heard enough that they can evaluate
plenty. Thinking one will thwart the opposition in rec.audio.pro is like
calling bird**** on a salad "dressing".

I see: it's up to others to control yourself. Shouting down? What place
does that have in dialog? What would work perfectly well is to let
robots have the last word and then ignore them in the future. As long as
we keep ****ting in the salad RAP gets the same old dressing.

Hopefully, we can have both - an imperfect group, and posters who are

That's exactly the stance that I took a couple of weeks ago... as long
as Will M. didn't regurgitate anything, I did not post in a political thread.
I kept it up for about a week and crumbled after his return. I did not
address him directly but twice, and I never hit his follow-ups to me.
My political posting has fallen to an ocassional comment... nothing
more.
But it was funny to note, that during the days Will was gone political
posts dropped to virtually none. For every one post he makes, three
to six people refute him... so tell me, where is the *real* "problem"?

I only refute ( or agree with) the refutals. It's part of a 12-step program.

Thanks John. And take note gentlemen - I didn't start the so-called "15
off-topic Willstg style threads", that was Al and George and Jake etc., and
when a bunch of guys jump all over me at once when I respond to one of them,
that's all *my* fault?
I'll admit to the sin of "bloviating" and I'll take the same heat as
anyone else. But spare me the disinegenous hypocrisy from people who have
participated in these threads themselves (like David and Hank, and Don and Al
certainly haven't a leg to stand on either). Suggesting that if I would just

Al,
1. Political posts are by far the largest group of offenders. No entropy of
this sort has ever occurred in this newsgroup since I've been a part of it.
2. 70.7 (RMS) of them are pointless "I'm right/you're wrong" bitch slaps.
2a. If these folks really had any balls they'd be out doing something about
it instead of jerking off their rhetoric on this newsgroup.
3. I'm not alone in this. As this string will prove others are also upset
about it and we can';t even begin to count those who have just pulled up
stakes and left rather than stick around.
4. All of us have, in the past, called a spade a spade and told people to
shape up. Again, I'm not alone here.
5. It's not about me. It's about the group and what it was started for.
(sorry, I'll try not to end sentences with a preposition anymore)
6. Fair, your call the hijacking of an entire ****ing newsgroup fair? How the
**** do I know where the line is. I DO know that the political post are waaay
over the line. You don't have to be a ****ing math wizard to see that.
7. Why do I seem to stand out? Because I care a enough about the ideas of the
people who came together to make this newsgroup to get ****ed when I see
others empty their ****ing ashtrays in it on a daily basis.
Will I get in someone's face? You bet. As I expect someone would get in my
face if I went against why we are here.
Thanks for asking. BTW, did I mention the charter says no OT posting?

With all due respect, Hank, I simply cannot see how OT
discussions in threads that are completely OT can possibly
render the forum useless for anyone as it relates to audio
issues.
It is simply too easy to push out of one's view a thread
that could grow to hundreds of posts which are found
annoying. It takes the k key in most readers. As I've said
before, annoyance is a personal choice as is remaining with
a mechanism for reading news that is obsolete in not
allowing the choice. Do we continue to use gear that has
been far surpassed?
I _will_ speak up and ask people that hijack audio threads
to political purposes to move the sub-discussion to its own
thread because in that case it _is_ difficult to see what
you want without having to trip over what you don't and that
does indeed render the thread useless for many. Honestly,
though, I haven't seen that happen but once in a blue moon.
Political threads are almost always their own entities.
I kill a lot of audio threads, however, because they are
outside my domain of interest so hi-jacking may well be
happening a lot more than I know.

Again, I fail to see why discussion among members about
things that aren't what brought them together in the first
place is in any way a bad thing. If it were unavoidably
placed before all member's eyes I would have a much
different POV but it is utterly, simply and easily avoidable
unless one doesn't want to avoid it for whatever reason.
People who petulantly take their marbles and go home because
they don't like things that they make the conscious choice
to see concern me not in the least. Nor do people who take
the time to wade through what they consider **** just so
that they can stir it up or insult and denigrate those who
don't share their perspective as to it being ****.

At this point, the discussion of off-topic posts has become a metasubject,
and is taking up more bandwidth than the off-topic posts themselves. So I've
a suggestion. Let's stop posting on off-topic threads, and let's stop
yelling about how we don't like off-topic threads. Just say no. Better yet,
just talk about audio.
Peace,

I have a capable newsreader. Some folks who used to post fairly

that they don't have time to **** around with a **** heap somebody else

contributing what they know about professional audio. So they don't

I know both of them, and they are both good people who normally discuss
audio here.
Ty is sort of upset because there is a _lot_ of off-topic crap here. I
agree that there's a lot of it, but right now everybody is on edge and
nobody anywhere in real life seems to be talking about anything else. I
expect that this will settle down in short order, but in the meantime
everyone in the country is sort of on a short fuse about politics.

It's not, no. And I think it's out of control. But it's out of control
everywhere, not just in this newsgroup, and I don't think it will be back
in control until after the election (which just happens to be right after
the AES show, so expect a week of absolute hell in early November no matter
who wins the election or what gets announced at the show).

Fortunately there are many among us quite capable of arriving at decisions
without the benefit of the random rantings of fanatics.
And (read this next part carefully)lack of self control is the number one
contributing factor to loss of freedom.
It's sad that so many continually demonstrate all too clearly why the world
is still so disheveled.
If people can't abide that which was created by others in order to serve a
specific purpose but would rather tear it apart for their own reasons how
can they stand so righteously in defense of that which they hold dear
against those who choose to do the same to it? ( It's ok I know that those
to whom this applies won't let that sink in sufficiently to understand thier
own hypocrisy ).
Oh nevermind , now, since I didn't hit cancel after typing this as is my

Oh nevermind , now, since I didn't hit cancel after typing this as is my
usual habit when being sucked in by this type of argument, I'm as guilty as
the rest... Damn. The difference is, at least I can take solice in the fact
this is the last I'll have to say about it in this forum... lol

This is not a US only group, You may have an election year, so
what.
I wonder how you would react if I started posting messages about
Mogens Lykketoft and Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Posting political messages in a audio group is just plain stupid

Or else what?
You may have noticed I have refrained from OT posting recently,
however it was not due to your playing cop.

Fantastic, I can use the money.
Here's something I thought of this morning while walking my dog.
Why do I think, Mick & Keith are "Renaissance" men?
..
..
..
..

Beause they each look about 500 years old!

Particularly since it should be waist deep in the waste. But then again,
I'm not someone who normally calls someone on things like mispellings such
as "maroon"! <g> Then again, I never spent a lot of time watching those
cartoons either, stoned or not.
