Are there any MP3 players that are not hard drive based but rather removable
disc based. Discs can be CDRs, CDRWs, DVD-+R, DVD-+RW. I'm especially
interested if there're DVD-+RWs stand alone MP3 players available. Thanks.

Marantz sells a couple CD players that can also play CDRs with MP3s on them.

Leave out the DVD requirement and there are a tone of options.
I like the iRiver stuff--model numbers 350 and up have field updateable firmware <http://iriveramerica.com/products/cd.aspx>

Yamada DVX-6600, will play just about anything you throw at it. No good if
you want to put together playlists or anything though...

Thanks.
I bought the Audiophase CDM375 from Best Buy for $30. It plays
CD, CDR, and CDR loaded with mp3 or WMA files. It looks just like the
average portable CD player. The display shows only the folder number,
file number and playing time. When you press STOP, it shows you to
total number of folders and files on the disc. There is an effective
skip prevention function. It also comes with a car kit and a pair of
useless headphones.
At the price, it's difficult to fault in any way.

Thanks for the responses. One more thing I forgot to mention is that I want to
be easily browsing through the artists, albums and song titles. The directory
structure would be something like:
ARTIST1/ALBUM1/songs
/ALBUM2/songs
......
ARTIST2/ALBUM1/songs
/ALBUM2/songs
Thanks.

People seem to think that you asked for a portable unit judging by the
replies. I read 'Standalone' as being a domestic type unit (??)
I doubt whether any of the portable units will do what you ask. Are you
connecting to a TV? If so, the unit I mentioned does as you asked.
Not sure whether other DVD players that support MP3 will read them from
DVD+/-R/RW. The Yamada models will.

You have to look at each player individually to see how they index your
music. Whether or not your music gets loaded on the portable player with
enough tags to support all of the supported search modes is up to you.
My NJB3 has a find command that will find by album title, artist, genre and
playist name, for example.

Yes, domestic (stationary), not portable.

I prefer not to connect to a TV. But if needed, I don't mind.

I have Philips DVP 642. It seems to read from DVD+/-RW. However, it trims
the directory names, song titles etc. So it's hard to browse.

I don't know of any such beast with its own display. On my yamada, one has
to be careful about the length of filenames as well, it only displays maybe
the first dozen characters on the tv display.
