View Full Version : Aphex compellor for stereo buss?

I did a search for best 2 buss compressor. Of course API 2500, TG1, Crane song
etc., were chosen. Someone mentioned an Aphex compellor. I cannot justify the
$$$$ for the big boys, at this point. So, will the compellor suffice, and which
compellor are we talking about (320A????).
thanks to all in advance

I use a Compellor/Dominator II for the stereo/mono out of small PA's that I
use for club gigs. I have a 320..it can do stereo or dual mono..which is cool
for a mono system you ahve a neat insert for a vocal group or whatever. Used
they are a great deal..$350-450 USD.

I'm a bottom feeder.... and I use the Compellor/Dominator duo on almost
everything that requires light stereo compression/levelling/limiting before
hitting my 2-track editor. If used lightly, the mastering guys usually don't
have any problems with it. I have a pair that I carry for live to 2-track stuff,
a set in the studio, and install them in fixed PA systems. Very good gear
for the $$$. Tech Support is outstanding...
320A would be your baby... but I suggest adding the Dominator (multi-
band peak limiter) after the Compellor to catch the transient peaks.
Both devices can be destructive, as I suppose most 2-buss gear is,
so work them a little conservatively until you get a grip on what they
do on a variety of program material. On some stuff, you may find you
don't need them at all, and on other stuff they might save your butt.
The model 300 is no longer supported... stay away from this one.

I have (under duress) used a Compellor model 300 as a 2-buss comp
more-or-less successfully. The trick is to be painstakingly meticulous
in gain-staging the bitch, and then to be extremely conservative in
terms of how hard you spank the signal. But used jusiciously, I found
it increased density & loudness with no objectionable artifacts.
Wouldn't necessarily be my first choice, but then again, since I
happen to own one, it often is my last choice (sometimes just prior to
No Compression At All...sometimes only after that has proved
inappropriate).

I've find nothing is great on the stereo buss too.

If you want transparent levelling, the Compellor will suffice. It won't give
you aggressive in-your-face compression. Most of the time you won't even know
it's working. You'll just notice that your meters are consistently at the same
place, even though you still perceive fairly natural dynamics. The limiter
function is a bust, though, often producing clicks. The metering takes some
real getting used to.

Last time i tried using it , i couldn't set it up for unity with zero tone ,
so
just went ahead and used it anyway . Is there a trick ?

I'm forgetting what the A is, but my 320 is incredibly transparent. Don't
expect to use the limiter on it. Don't expect it to "bite" as most
compressors do. Many folks end up calling APhex after a few days to say, "I
don't think it's working."
I've done the tests. I know it is.

The best thing I ever found on my stereo buss was Chet Atkins.

Well, there's a level switch on the back, for +4, +8, and -10. Make sure that's
right.
