Any experiences with these two cheap tube mics?
The Mojave is a kit designed by Dave Royer around
an ADK capsule and body, and the CAD is an American-assembled
mic made from Chinese parts. The CAD also uses an
IC output stage, so isn't exactly totally a tube mic.

thanks

If this is what you want, I'd go for the Royer design. He had an
article in Tape Op a while back for what's probably essentially (or
exactly) this microphone. It was simple and straightforward. If you
get a good capsule, you'll end up with a decent mic.

The next thing is whether the sound of the mic is good for what you
want to record. But you won't know that until you have the mic in one
hand and the source in the other, and try some recording.

"The Barstow '47"

I can't help but want one, or two, just on principle.

Has anyone done the upgrade kit, the MA-2?

I was considering raping my ADK A51 and doing this, I wonder if anyone here
has had good results.

I built it on perfboard according to the original magazine article, and it
is pretty good. It's more work than my mod, and it takes an external power
supply, but it definitely sounds different than mine. Mostly because of the
transformer, I am guessing. Either way, the sound of the final result depends
a lot on the quality of the capsule that you get, and with all of the Feilo
mikes that varies a lot from unit to unit.

Is that the one I saw advertised in Tape Op that had the electronics
in an ammunition box?

I've got a Barstow 47 (perfboard, point-to-point, all components sourced
directly from the Tape Op article). I've had it for a couple of years and it
has emerged as a winner and pairs up nicely with a Forssell CS-1 preamp on
most femmes I've tracked with it. I'm threatening to get another.
