Why does this remind me so powerfully of the first adds for Aphex? The only
thing missing is the explanation of how this wonder effect was first
discovered in a miswired Dynakit.

Oh, Great! I do live sound, and now I'm waiting to see a band's tech
rider demanding that my FX rack include a TC "CHARACTER" processor.

I suspect that Rane may already have a patent on the algorithms used
in the CHARACTER: http://www.rane.com/pdf/old/pi14dat.pdf

I once gave copies of that literature to my sales staff, and one guy
really got upset about the "new age car wash" section.

I had to explain that it was a joke. The rest of the context clues were
of no help to him.

He has now gone back to selling used tires.

My favorite part:

Rane’s exclusive artificial intelligence (AI)
algorithm determines whether the user knows what he’s (it’s
always a he; she’s are too smart to buy this thing)

That's sadly not too far from the truth. It seems people just want one
button they can push and automatically create great music. Why not just get
a radio?

When I was in college radio, it always struck me how different that job
was from playing and recording music. That difference is smaller now, unfortunately.

Washington DC. It's just barely audible with a 22-bay yagi on the roof
in Williamsburg, in part due to adjacent-channel interference from Christian
translators. But the jazz programming beats any other station I have
heard hands down.

I couldn't read the knobs. If it has a "character" knob you must be
able to subtract character too. Hmmm, I think this thing has been
around for awhile.

I assume it has a "soar" knob as well.......

i feel prety fortunate in saint louis getting kdhx fm88.1, which is
still volunteer-run community radio, 90.7 kwmu, which is npr, and 88.7
wsie, which is "member supported jazz radio". there's kwur 90.3 from
wash. u., but i can barely get that since the school won't give them
more than 10 watts -- which is too bad, if i could pick up kwur, i
would never want for radio programming.

WPFW does have some good jazz programming (I'm listening to it at the
moment, but it's contemporary R&B which I can take or leave) but they
also have a lot of talk. The real wasteland around here is weekdays
between 3 and 6 PM. I've heard all the news I can stand, I've read the
newspaper by then, and there's no music on the air that I like. That's
when I submit to fidelity abuse and listen to some of the reliable
Internet radio.

We do have some pretty good barbecue around here, though. Any time.

Did he take you to a Brazilian Churrascarria? We have the Green Field place
in Rockville, we call it Meat Boy - where the boy with a big skewer brings
around everything from rabbit to prime rib. You turn the Red/Green thingy
over to signal receptivity (or lack thereof) for more protein to your table.

Come back and see us and we will take you to Mandalay and Green Field, both!

That sounds right, but I'm not sure it was in Rockville (I'm not sure,
though - we rode the subway out to meet Mike and then he drove us...) But
Mandalay (that was the Burmese joint, right?) was lovely. It would be fun to
come up to the area again.
