Compressor wanted!

OK, so this is mostly a WTB type post. I'm needing a compressor to compliment
my MP2-NV. Right now, I'm chaining a couple of RNCs off of it, but I'm looking
for something that can give me a little better performance on vocals
specifically. Plenty of gain reduction, fast response.

So, I'm really leaning toward an elop type design, like a Langevin (just the
compressor, or the DVC). Others in the running are the venerable 1176ln,
Distressor, or a Trakker, but the last one is going to be out of my budget I'm
afraid.

I'd like to be able to get some use out of it on bass as well, and that's where
I feel the Distressor or 1176 even would be a better choice than the elop.
But, I'm open to suggestions. If you have something in mind that might work
better for vox (with bass as an afterthought) let me know. So, send me your
prices if you have a decent box you'd like to unload!

I've used a Distressor on bass & vox... it rocks on both, IMO; although
I've not used it to track with in those apps (I like it for tracking kick,
though). I personally don't think the 1176 would be as good on either bass
or vocals as the Distressor.

I've used a Distressor on bass & vox... it rocks on both, IMO; although
I've not used it to track with in those apps (I like it for tracking kick,
though). I personally don't think the 1176 would be as good on either bass
or vocals as the Distressor.

The thing about the Distressor is that you can get it to act like just about
every kind of compressor there is. It will do a competent LA-3, it will do
a competent 1176. If you have to have just one compressor to go along with
the RNC, the Distressor is probably the most versatile thing around. It is
worth playing around with one in the store just to see the huge variety of
different sounds you can get out of it.

The thing about the Distressor is that you can get it to act like just about
every kind of compressor there is. It will do a competent LA-3, it will do
a competent 1176. If you have to have just one compressor to go along with
the RNC, the Distressor is probably the most versatile thing around. It is

different sounds you can get out of it.

IF you want fast you shold avoid the opto.

Since you're looking for one box to do everything, go with the distressor.

IF you want fast you shold avoid the opto.

Since you're looking for one box to do everything, go with the distressor.

I no longer have it but my old LA2A was about the keenest thing I ever
used across vox or bass.

A fantastic alternative ( on account of it ain't all that alternative) is an
ADL 1000. I've never come across a more LA2A-ish LA2A copy. The stereo ones
(ADL1500) can be found used for less than 2K.

Distressors are good and versatile, but not my first choice for vocals
(except screamers/rappers) or bass. For vox (esp. female)I LOVE my
1176ln silver face, tho I don't love it on bass. My first choice for
bass is usually dbx 160 (I have both X and XT). I could sell you one
of mine if you're interested, but it would be for bass with vox as
afterthought, the opposite of what you are looking for.

I think the 1176/160 combo is hard to beat for your specific apps, tho
the EL8s are better all around performers, but not by much, IMO.

I did see someone selling a Trakker for around $1500. I think it was
on Swee****er's trading post or rec.music.makers.marketplace. I have
no connection to the seller.

Distressors are good and versatile, but not my first choice for vocals

Don't do it! Joe has excellent taste in consoles, but don't listen to his
compressor advice in this instance. Don't buy an ADL - not if you want the
sound of an LA-2A, at least. (And yes, I have directly compared them).

Have you ever used a Peavey VCL-2? (Well, you are from Nashville, so for
sure you have!) I really like mine, but I never made the comparison.
For me it kind of stands on its own. It is supposed to be an LA2ish
compressor without really being a copy.

Now those are some strong sentiments! I'm leaning towards the trakker at the
moment. I contacted the gentleman mentioned in a previous post on this thread
who had one for sale. I've not heard anything negative about it, so I'm going
to give it a shot. It just seems to be a better choice for vocals than a
Distressor. Dave, if I'm wrong, feel free to bust me on it.

Actually I meant that being from Nashville you would know it. Apparently
most of them are sold to studios in Nashville.

I compared an ADL, a Manley ELOP and an LA2A side by each, and while there were
diferences between all of them, the ADL sounded a whole lot more like the UA
than the ELOP did. While I no longer have access to the LA2A, I have compared
my Distressors and Trakkers to the ADL and have not been able to get either to
sound the way the ADL (and to my best recollection the LA2A) sounded on bass or
vox. I can get the Trakker to sound somewhat similar to my ELOP. I ought to
mention the LA2A was a rental from DreamHire. It was an old one- not a
reissue- so I don't know what age and condition might have contributed to its
sound. I liked the way it sounded and the ADL sounded very much like it.
