What is the going price for a used Cranesong Flamingo?
I have Flamingo that I bought a few years ago when I tried to build a
studio with a friend of mine. As much fun as it was, I have to decided
to leave the recording to the professionals.
Now I am trading it to a friend of mine for studio time in a proper
studio and he said that he will give me the current market value for a
used Flamingo in studio time.
It was used sparingly in a smoke free studio over the period of about
a year and a half and has been carefully stored away for the last
year.
I could not find any listings on Ebay.
What can I expect to get for it?
thanks,
Pedro

There's such a thing? Certainly not enough of them going for sale used
for there to be a firmly established price. The way to find out is to
first find someone who has one for sale, then ask how much he or she
wants for it.

Oh, then you want to know its value. See above.

Why not ask him how much studio time he'll offer you in trade, and if
that seems like a good offer, take it. Who cares how much it's worth
in dollars when you can make a deal for what you need. Of course if
you DON'T need studio time, you might as well sell it for real money.

See above. Generally when something isn't common enough to find for
sale either currently or within the history of completed sales range
on eBay, you can count on it being worth maybe 85-90% of the current
best new price. Since Cranesong is a small company, they don't offer
deep discounts to large scale buyers like Guitar Center, so you should
be able to call any of their dealers (check the web site), ask for the
price, and figure on just slightly less than that used.

I traded one for a mint condition Manley Stereo Pultec earlier this summer.
Find the going rate on the Manley and you'll know what I sold mine for.

I would, in fact, prefer studio time. And the studio owner (a friend
of mine) is asking me to set the price. He is doing this as a favor to
me because he knows that I don't have the necessary cash to record AND
that I no longer have any need for the Cranesong. I think he reads RAP
fairly regularly and may indeed be reading this.

I could not find any listings on E-Bay so a general rule of thumb like
that is just what I need. I checked Mercenary your general rule of
thumb would give me what I had hoped for.
I want to be fair to my friend while getting as much studio time as is
possible.
thanks for your help Mike!!

If I got the cash I would only do something stupid with it, like pay
my bills. And then I would have nothing to show for it.
Why not record a bunch of my songs that are probably not as good as
good as I think they are with the added benefit of having someone else
to blame when the whole mess is done? ;)

Well whatever you need I guess, I've certainly swapped out my services for
studio time before but that's a pretty nice piece you have....he's making out
on the deal IMO so get as many hours as you can.

Typically I'd say around $2200-2400. They are rare on the used
market, and they are a small boutique very high end company. That
translates to around 85%-90% return of new. Considering they have,
literally, a life time warranty from Crane Song, I think that's more
than fair for the used seller.
