Is there some forgotten setting on this machine that is causing it to NOT
write good abs tc unless the whole tape is done continuously start-to-finish
and never recorded on again?

You tried rewinding to the beginning every time you put the tape into the
machine? Some machines will not record A-time unless you bring it all
the way to the start.

all my SONY's will take TC from where it is (give it a second or so of
overlap) and jam to it and write from there on seamlessly.

No secret setting, but it (as well as many DATs) won't write time code
unless they know they're starting from the beginning of the tape.

Hit the Rewind button after loading the tape to make sure it's really
at the head. Then it should write absolute time code (because it knows
for sure that it's really absolute - from the beginning).

The only way to get absolute time started is to begin at the very top of the
tape. But after that I've never had any trouble adding on with absolute
time, so long as the new recording starts before the end of the original
recording. (No gaps in the time.)
