You tried rewinding to the beginning every time you put the tape into the
machine? Some machines will not record A-time unless you bring it all
the way to the start.

even that don;t work sometimes...

all my SONY's will take TC from where it is (give it a second or so of
overlap) and jam to it and write from there on seamlessly.
