Well, I just had an Ampex 440B-4 up on Ebay... went for a low but not
astoundingly low price to a guy in Italy, in spite of the fact that I
had said that I would not ship outside the US. When he found out how
much postage would really be (and he didn't even find out about teardown
and crating, which is probably another $500 at least), he realized that
this was probably not a good idea.

And, as he was only five bucks over the next lowest bidder, I offered
a second chance.... but no go... probably because he was as suspicious
about the whole thing as I would be.

I just bought a 1940's deco wall phone with a 'second chance' offer that worked out well. I was the highest bidder, but did not meet the reserve price. The seller sent me (through eBay) a 'second chance' offer with a link to a 'buy it now' at the price I bid and all came off nicely.

The point was also made that we should beware of the email address of the
guy asking for payment.

I recently sloughed an eBay auction I had won because the seller asked for
payment from two different email addresses. It was a video projector for
about $1K and I didn't want to fool around with that kind of money. The
seller may have been on the level in the final analysis, but he was very
impatient and agressive and at best scared me off.

I paid the address that went with the auction via PayPal, as he requested.
Then, he said that he couldn't get the money out of PayPal and promised to
refund my payment. While I was waiting for the refund to come through to my
bank, he demanded a second payment, NOW!!!

I took the money back when he finally refunded it, and then told him to
buzz off. I got one of those "Three times and you're out" letters from
eBay, but I appealed. They let me off the hook, presumably because I could
prove via PayPal that I had completed the auction once.
