First I know everyone is going to say they are probably **** and would
be a good door stop or boat anchor. But there is so many of them out
there I am surprised there is no mods on the net to make it more
useable or to add a direct input. Has anyone modified theirs and would
like to share what can be done to it?

Thank you,
Chris

The original 280? There are lots of modifications out there. For one
thing, you can remove the predistortion circuit on the record electronics
boards. Also there are some published changes to the tape direction sensor
that will prevent some of the more disasterous failure modes on those.

I suspect that silicon retrofits to the electronics might be possible, even,
but that could be a bit of an adventure to make work. I have never seen anyone
do this to the 280 but I have seen other germanium gear retrofitted.

Milt at Sequoia used to have xerox copies of all the modification sheets that
radio stations used to pass around. I think VIF has now taken over his
parts and documentation.

Of course, the 280B is a totally different animal.

shhh... just so you don't get flamed as being whatever our
below-the-equator correspondent feels appropriate, that
would have been Mel Crosby at Sequoia - (but I know you knew
that) - or maybe there was a Milt - I only ever talked to
Mel. And what a great sense of humor Mel had. I'd advise
anybody to get his handouts if you can find them, just for
the jokes. Mel completely rebuilt all the electronics in my
280 1/2" 4-channel, and it performs better than new.
