simple: does a better soundcard equal reduced latency?

I am thinking of upgrading to the Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS Platinum 2
from my current Soundblaster Live. I'm having problems with audio
latency in Cubase SX 1.2. I record a second track and it's out of
sync with the first track, and punchins are out of time. Might this
upgrade reduce latency? Any other knowledge about this soundcard?

Research to see if there are ASIO drivers available for it.

Your problems with the Live aren't caused by audio latency in the
usual sense. This is a constant delay, noticeable when monitoring an
input through Cubase's audio mixer (which is why, with a high-latency
system we DON'T monitor that way) but fully compensated for during
playback. This system may be breaking down on your computer because
you are using 44.1KHz sample rate. The SoundBlaster/Audigy cards
convert everything on-the-fly to an internal 48KHz sample rate. This
can cause havoc with timing. Have you tried setting the sample rate
to 48KHz?


There are ASIO drivers for the current Audigy cards, but they have
limitations.

A better soundcard WILL allow lower latency, but any Audigy isn't
really a better card. Look at the current price for he M-Audio
Audiophile 249. It's almost a no-brainer :-) You can run your Live
alongside it if you want the midi synth or Soundfonts. Otherwise, bin
it, or keep it for next time you build a general-purpose computer.

Or maybe, if running at 48KHz doesn't raise any other issues for you,
doing this will make everything fall into place? It's worth a try.
