They did -- basically a feedback pair of 12AX7s. Better components, tighter
EQ and a more robust power supply, but essentially a similar design. By the
time they got to the PV5, though, they were using 5965 cathode followers
inside the feedback loops, and 5751 tubes for the second stage in each loop,
and regulated plate supplies (emitter follower with a zener string on the
base, essentially the same as Audio Research's preamps of the time).
