If it's primarily going to be your vocal mic, you absolutely need to try it
on your voice. Not only with headphones on. Find a well stocked shop, have
them put you in a reasonably quiet room, with a choice of mics and a
recording setup capable of exporting a session file in a format compatible
to your own home rig (wav. files on a CD-R, for example). Bring your guitar
with you, play one tune several times, singing each time to a different mic.
Then repeat the procedure, but this time record the guitar. Take the session
files to your studio, relax and listen to the results.
You should be prepared to travel far if necessary. It's worth it.
You do know a comparison to women could be drawn again, don't you?
