RME multiface question

Finally moved up from the no-longer supported gina20 to a RME
multiface on my Win2k system. The RME sounds and works great, but i
have a few questions for any RME users out there....

1) Does your box run extremely hot? It feels like i could fry an egg
on my breakout box within 15 minutes of plugging in the firewire
cable. Disconnecting the cable does cool the box off, but that seems
like an awkward solution

2) Has anyone noticed the sample rate inadvertently slip when using
the multiface with logic (5.5) or any other software? Reselecting the
hardware from with Logic's menu seems to fix the problem, but again,
seems like an awkward solution.

I have a few days left before I can return/exchange this hardware, so
any thoughts on these issues, or other issues RME owners have come
across would be greatly appreciated.

RME follows the sample rate set by the software. This can happen if
some other software (say, AIM or Windows itself) plays a sound at a
different sample rate (say, 22.5KHz) than what you're working at... make
sure to disable all Windows sounds, or (better) to make sure your RME
isn't the default output device.

Also, I believe the very latest PC driver includes a fix to ignore
sample rate from the PC in certain cases; I can't remember what the
details are, but this might help your situation.

Yes the Multiface runs hot and that is not a problem.

and

I did not take that for an answer either, so I cut and attached a second
front face plate for field use / rack mount.
All the heat of the multiface can be handled from just the front face plate.
Mine now runs over 10 degrees cooler.

My sample rates do not slip.
I don't care for logic so can not comment on that program as I gave up on it
after about 20 hours of use.

This one's been asked on numerous occasions in the RME newsgroup and the
official response is that it's nothing to worry about. BTW, if you've not had
a look there yet, the group really is an outstanding resource.

Well, it's only available on news.x-networks.de so maybe that's the problem?

You don't use a user name or password to access it - just add an account for
news.x-networks.de to your newsreader and leave the other fields blank and
you should be good to go. The RME group won't be too hard to identify - there
are only five groups on the entire server.

However, I've just noticed you're using AOL... Can you even add additional
news servers to AOL? Or can you run a regular newsreader over the top of it?

I've got Comcast. I've tried to figue it out before but always end up using the
AOLNewsreader - which is pretty lame.

Or just click on <news://news.x-networks.de/rme-audio.forum> and see what happens.

Yes.

So if the aboce link brings up the AOL newsreader, just open up Outlook Express and configure it yourself as described above.

Thanks, Kurt. It's on my newsgroups now, so I can ask dumb questions when I
need to about my 9652.

BTW, got a cheap suggestion for having a ADAT lightpipe compatible digital
switcher so I can end swapping lightpipe cables?

I think that Radio Shack has one, a 1x4 switch. Someone even tested it
with with the ADAT Lightpipe and found that it worked. $15, but for 24
channels of gozinta and gozouta you'd need six of them. Kind of a
physical mess, I'd think. Better start marketing your secret BBQ
marinade and buy yourself a Z-Systems Detangler with the profits.
