View Full Version : U2 CD stunt or what ?

OK, they had a CD of their new album pinched.
Is this :
1 - actually the only existing version possible of the final mixes of the
tracks (and for some reason producing another equal one is impossible), as
inferred by the TV news reports ?
2 - A copy that has got out and they (understandably) don't really wanted
pirated or speard around the public domain ?
3 - A publicity stunt ?

Curious...

At first I thought it was a stunt as I read it was a CDR lost a photoshoot
for the artwork (why do you need a generic looking CDR for artwork?) but it
seems the photos took place at the studio (I assume they may have been
playing the CD for "inspiration", etc.). The part of the article that got me
was the record company claiming this abbreviated, rough mix version of the
CD would "cost them millions in lost sales". WTH? I wouldn't think they'd
risk calling the police in if it was a publicity stunt. No such thing as bad
press, though.

TV report (probably sourced Faux News - it's clearly flawed) last night.
Just found a more concise report here, that puts the story in proper
context.

If it's an ongoing investigation, US practice would be to withold some
details. The guy who claims to "know the details" is the culprit.
I imagine this was a theft that they decided to turn into an
"opportunity."--no bad press and all that.

I seem to remember the same thing happened to them a few years ago
(1991?). You'd think they'd have learned about security by now.
Cheers.

When this happened to Radio Head's "Hail to the Thief", a friend gave
me a copy of the "leaked" album - to which I listened for
months...then promptly bought the album when it actually came out -
but maybe I'm not your average music consumer.
In addition, I don't see how this would end up as "millions in lost
sales" anymore than it would if the kidz ripped it and posted it the
first day it was released in its proper form.
I'm not a big U2 fan, so I wouldn't have even known they were working
on a new album had this story not come up. Doesn't mean I'll buy, but
at least I know about it...no bad press indeed.

Radiohead leak their album, don't see loss of sales there.

That's what I thought, especially since it was a "rough cut". It seems it
would generate anticipation for the finished it version if it was decent at
all and would only be detrimental if it totally sucked and caused people to
not even want to listen to the new one. Though I know how picky and
controlling we musicians are about our own recordings. I probably wouldn't
like it either if someone did that to me.

This assumes that you know how many it would have sold had it not been
leaked.
