View Full Version : Mackie SDR removable drive question

We've got the Mackie SDR 24-track recorder, which is actually
working pretty well for us in our current situation. Our problem
is that the only way to transfer data at this time is via the
USB[1] port. This is horribly slow! We have to let it run all
night just to transfer data.
Can the Mackie M90 Hard Disks be mounted directly on a PC?
Does one have to get that Mackie Media frame to go into your PC?
I can't find anything other than a minor mention of that on their
website.
It looks to me like a standard IDE 20G hard drive is what they're
using, just formatted Mackie style (and it looks like the SDR will
format a hard drive for you anyway).
I'd love to be able to just pop the Hard Drive out of the SDR and
mount it on the PC. It would take 20 minutes to transfer data
instead of all bloody night...
BTW, this thing works great for multitrack location recording,
as long as you have a decent break to switch disks before 90 minutes
are up...

Buy a Lian-Li RH-58 and install it in your computer. Drive is formatted FAT32 and should open right up.

The stock BIOS on MDR/HDR machines would only recognize drives up to 32 mbytes, not sure if that limit applies to the SDR as well. Mike Rivers should be along shortly to fill in the blanks...

1) That's 32 GB, not MB on the MDR & HDR. No such limit on the SDR.
2) If you can't find the Lian-Li RH-58, I'm using a RH-47.
3) 20 minutes for transfer assumes you have a very slow computer or a huge
session. My 90 minute programs on 5 tracks copy in about 5 minutes.

Yes. I have a Lian Li RH-58 drive bay mounted in my PC and can plug a
Mackie removable drive into it.

The SDR external drive is officially supposed to be set to be a Master
but I think works with the drive set for "Cable Select." That might be
more compatible with your computer if you have another drive on the
port that you connect the drive bay to.

You can format it with your PC, too.

The SDR will support as large a drive as you can buy now. If you want
to fit a longer show on a single drive, just get a bigger drive and
put it in the carrier. The RH-58 is almost always sold as a
combination of the bay and carrier together, so when you get that for
your PC, make another removable drive out of the carrier that comes in
the package. Put a 120 or 160 GB drive in it. They're cheap.

You can stick the removable drives in this portable Firewire "Dock" as
well, and use it with a PC or a Mac.
